Concert Summary

Nona Hendryx was one third of the outrageous, post-modern funk group LaBelle (which had re-invented itself from Patty LaBelle & the Bluebells in the 1960s), and scored big in 1974 with Allen Toussaint classic, "Lady Marmalade." The group, however, which helped usher in the era of disco, fell flat with their 1976 release, Phoenix, having grown tired of lavish costuming and theatrics-heavy stage shows.

By early 1977, LaBelle was over and each decided to pursue distinctly different musical directions. Patty LaBelle embraced R&B dance and pop music and had a platinum level solo…entire summary

I use to go to thames tv studios in london to watch all the tapings for a concert programme that they were doing called "Meltdown" you had about two hundred people in the studio and a couple of bands a night, all different styles from "Motorhead" and "Meat Loaf" down to "Nik Kershaw", on this friday as i was leaving the friend who got me in said that they had just put another show on tomorrow and it was Nona Hendryx, bring as many of your mates as you can so we can get some kind of audience will ya,i turned up with a bunch of heavy rock loving mates thinking thanks for ruining our saturday night then the lady came on and blew us totally away, heavy metal funk of the finest order for 75 minutes, what a band and what a performer and voice, she only slowed down twice all night for a couple of piano based numbers, "Winds of Change" being one of them, but things like "i sweat" were just heavy metal beasts live, but here for me lies the problem, on the monday straight down to the record shop to pick her new album and a couple of others only to get home and find that it was average dance stuff at best, as if the guitarist had been killed in the mix if there was one at all. it seemed to me that she was pleasing her record company's wishes to release commercial, radio friendly product but live was out to blow your bloody head off, either way i felt that if you liked one you were going to be disapointed in the other just as i was, if i had loved the records and wanted to hear them live the same way boy would i have misjudged the schizophrenic nature of Nona, if only she could have stuck with one way or the other and built a really strong body of work that i believe that she was more than capable of doing. saying that this is a very good show although misleading with the deep purple reference in the summary, no if only you could get some "Mothers Finest" in the vault to really show off some great live heavy metal funk !

Nona's concert in NYC in 1977 after the release of her 1st solo album. How tremendous to hear. I loved that album when I was 17, and still love Nona. No one like her. A very bravely talented performer and writer. A black woman doing rock who never saw any barriers in doing her music. Her body of work is amazing to hear time after time. She endures. Just saw Patti, Nona & Sarah reunite as Labelle in Detroit. Nona's done a lot of music. I'd love for her to release something new. She opens your mind with her words and music. I was 17 when her 1st solo album came out, and I'm still a big fan.
