Concert Summary

Two words for Crosby, Stills and Nash - Crazy Horse! This is rock 'n' roll as it was meant to be played: barely in tune and teetering on the brink of oblivion. No wonder Neil Young preferred rockin' in the free world with these guys over CSN's cuddle-folk round-up. You can hear the blood and sweat in every stuttering guitar jab, Danny Whitten's raspy tenor the perfect counterpoint to Neil's wavering holler.

Recently plucked from obscurity as a Laurel Canyon garage band, the Horse is in fine form during this appearance at the…entire summary

nobody has stayed as close to the cutting edge for as long as neil young. what a massive talent. he strangles the guitar and it begs for more...his sound is all his own

Simply beautiful. This is a great archival recording -- great sound quality. Wow, worth the entire Vault subscription price.

Danny Whitten. It pains me so much that "the disease" killed him. He really gave sobriety a shot and he sadly joined the long list of great people with so much to offer that are now dust and memories -- now maligned and misunderstood. He was so completely talented, and yet so completely doomed. RIP, Danny.

Cowgirl In The Sand is a classic rock/jam song of all time.

This was my first ever live concert and of all places "The Fillmore East" I believe it was with Steve Miller and Miles Davis on the billing. My dad took me as I was only 16 and he said the lower east side was a bad part of town for me to go alone. TY dad! A great show indeed!!! This was the first of many shows I saw at the Filmore but it remains a favorite. Thanks again Wolfgang's Vault, Eddo

    mmakshak:

I agree with your point on Crosby TO A DEGREE and if you read my entire post you would have seen him being praised for more than a few aspects of his most of his vocals and guitar ability; however, I the CSN music in general is just a little too cute, watery, dated, "utopian" in that typical "1960s way," and quite frankly wimpy ONLY FOR THOSE INDIVIDUALs (I am part of that group), that enjoy most of their music a little more gritty, rough, REAL, and straight up.

Neil Young, no doubt, definitely brought much of the above listed qualities to that group. If you'll notice, though, he didn't stay with them that consistently or for any significant length of time. Do you think it had as much to do with their music in addition to their constant bickering, huge egos (esp. Crosby & Stills) and the over-done use of stimulants (which never seem to create much "great" music?)

Neil Young heard The Rockets(led by Danny Whitten) play at the Whiskey A Go-Go. They had only been playing instruments a couple of years It was the launching pad for The Doors, Janis Joplin, The Byrds, Johnny Rivers, Buffalo Springfield, and so many others. Neil knew these guys, Billy Talbot, Ralph Molina and Danny Whitten were the answer to Neil's need to rock. Within two months, they recorded 'Everybody Knows This Is Nowhere'. Much is on this live album. The one song not exclusively written by Neil is 'Come On Baby Let's Go Downtown'. One of the few songs Neil has ever played on that he didn't sing lead. A testament to Danny Whitten and Neil's respect for him. Danny's death two years later led to Neil's song 'The Needle And the Damage Done' and subsequent 'Ditch Trilogy'. I am from Danny's birthplace, Columbus, Georgia, and no one knows of this talented man's contributions to the history of rock. That is going to change. I am in the process of writing everyone who is anyone with the Georgia Music Hall of Fame and this man will get his due recognition. Danny Whitten will be there one day.

frunobulax, I don't know who wrote all the songs, but have you listened to David Crosby's "Voyage". You can't be crummy and be part of that much good music.
