Concert Summary

One of the best American hard rock bands of their era, Mountain was in top form this evening, and gave a performance as remarkable and special as the occasion deserved. The group was modeled on the legendary English power trio Cream, with whom bass player Felix Pappalardi produced and recorded.

The set begins with a powerful take on "Never In My Life," featuring the massive guitar tones and distinctive vocals of West and the powerful rhythm section of Pappalardi and Laing. Having dedicated the next number to Billentire summary

This is probably Mountain at its best, and is very close to the way they sounded when I saw them in 1970 at McGaw Hall on the Northwestern University campus. In 1973 I saw them in Tampa, Florida, after the short lived West Bruce and Laing. I have to say, they never regained the sound they had before the first break up. This recording is their peak.

Guitars still not great but much better than the 1970 Filmore East recordings.

Some of the best guitar work. Great timing and style. Leslie West just as I remember hearing him in 1971.

Most of this material is side 2 of Flowers of Evil on vinyl (which is gathering dust in my collection since the demise of my turntable). The first Mountain song I ever heard was Mississippi Queen and I had to have a Mountain album after that. Yesterday I heard "Theme..." for the first time ever and was gobsmacked again. We didn't hear much of them here in Australia. Thank God the USA treats its heritage acts better than we do.

I rate Corky Laing in the same league as Ginger Baker, with Ginger ahead on points for his variations. Great work Wolfgang. You never cease to amaze me.

So great to have this music available. I was too young to see the classic line-up back in the day, but genuinely love this band. Huge influence on today's "stoner"/hard rock underground (bands like Fu Manchu, Monster Magnet, C.o.C, etc). I saw someone make a great post on a You Tube live clip from 1970.... "West plays every note like it's the last one he'll ever play is his life. Each note stands on it's own 2 feet and walks to the next note". Damn right Brother!!!

If I do make it to heaven, they'll no doubt be playing this as I enter through the golden gate. My jaw will drop, I'll go "damn!", and then suddenly end up in hell and forced to listen to an endless barrage of uninspired, dime-a-dozen rock and roll bands for all of eternity. Gotta remember to watch my language.

Comin up in black Detroit I grooved to a lot of Motown. And like everybody else who played bass I copied Jamerson, Graham and Weeks. But when I heard Felix and Leslie...they truly broke my heart. Saw them a couple of times...made me cry...Leslie always sounded like this wanton screamng bitch...and Felix was the renaiisance (sp?)man strong and melodic...He's been an inspiration ever since! This was one of the baddest bands of all times!!!!
