Concert Summary

One of the best American hard rock bands of their era, Mountain was in top form this evening, and gave a performance as remarkable and special as the occasion deserved. The group was modeled on the legendary English power trio Cream, with whom bass player Felix Pappalardi produced and recorded.

The set begins with a powerful take on "Never In My Life," featuring the massive guitar tones and distinctive vocals of West and the powerful rhythm section of Pappalardi and Laing. Having dedicated the next number to Bill Graham, the…entire summary

brotherbill any chance the Hackensack, NJ show was December 22, 1970 right before their New Year's Fillmore East run? Do you remember who opened? http://home.comcast.net/~gv0000/Mountain_Tour_Archive.htm

    Mountain_Tour_Archive:

Indeed, you are correct. It was Feb. 7, 1970 at RHS. "Stoned Gas" was the opening act.
I still have the concert review from that show that was printed in the local RHS rag.

Leslie West, Felix Pappalardi, Corky Laing and Steve Knight were slouched up along the lockers as we filed in. I was lucky enough to obtain their autograph prior to them going on.
They seemed amazed that someone would want their autograph.
Remember, this show was only about 6 months after Woodstock and not a lot of people were aware of Mountain unless you lived in the NY or NJ area.
If I remember correctly, the Climbing album had just been released and Mississippi Queen was moving up the charts.

Also saw them at the old Fox Theater in Hackensack NJ in1971 (?) as well as the Capitol Theater in Passiac NJ multiple times.

    A band for all time.........

    Regards ~ brotherbill

brotherbill, the Mountain concert at your high school wasn't February 7, 1970 at Ridgewood, NJ High School with Stoned Gas opening was it? If not where was it and do you remember the date? Thanks

  • brotherbill | Thursday, May 19, 2011 | 3:35 pm

Saw Mountain numerous times back in the day. For me, they filled the void that was left when Cream broke up. Mountain played the Fillmore East so many times back then they became known as the "house band" for that venue.
They also played my high school in February 1970.
One of the greatest bands of all time.
May you Rock in Peace Felix.

Well said thinlizzy4ever. He had so much talent and Les and Corky knew that. I think it was his folk background where his vocals developed. My god he was an awesome singer, and a helluva writer, arranger, producer, instrumentalist. He had it all!

"All in all, this is a remarkably fluid, energetic set, free of the overindulgence that often marred Mountain's live performances."...

"overindulgence"? isnt this just a knock on ...the Cream ripoff theme? or a general top forty critic's rap on the era of jamming rock music. too damn bad every song is not 2:40 long and has a beat/theme you can dance or cry to. I always thought their problem was a limited repertoire. Cream had hundreds of songs the Dead had...count em! Mountain had a couple score like most bands. At least they jammed and mixed it up.

To preface, I've seen over 450 concerts beginning with Janis in 1969. i saw Mountain in 1971 and I would put that performance in my personal Top 10 of all time. West's guitar sound, Felix's incredibly distinctive voice & great rhythm from Corky; it was a time...you had to be there, although this Fillmore gig shows them in fine form.

according to the date , is this the night they closed the Fillmore east? Just saw West with Allmans at the Beacon in March on MOOGIS! Leslie is still smokin! Very distinct and awesome powerful guitar sound. NED J.
