Concert Summary

This recording kicks off with Mott the Hoople breaking into "The Golden Age of Rock & Roll," the opening track from the band's The Hoople LP, which was the British band's new studio album at the time. By the time this show was recorded on Broadway, at New York's Uris Theater, the future of Mott the Hoople had already been cast. Hunter, the band's lead vocalist and chief songwriter, had already made the decision to depart, though he would stay in the band for another year. He had decided to keep his decision between himself and the band's manager, so although this tour was heralded as…entire summary

Bring Bender back and tour America. Ralphs' playing and stage presence in the reunion shows is desultory.

Agree with anon. Ariel Bender (Luther Grovsner) was infinetly superior to Mick Ralphs. At least live, which is all that matters And he was invited to join the Rolling Stones after Brian Jones passed.

Saw them in Leeds at the town hall in 73. Some upstarts in the supprt group dared to try and show them up. They went on to have few hits tho.

Sorry about the typing skill in my previous comment. What I meant was that Hunter and Ronson gave good gig! Before Mick's demise,of course!

  • bladesfan | Sunday, August 02, 2009 | 12:29 pm

They made a good noise.Mind you,I liked Hunter when he went gigging with Mick Ronsonwell it would not be after mick's death, would it?

Yes, it's true, WC, Mott are playing in London in October and "I've got my invite". I think they're doing four shows and that, they say, is it. They're all sold out, so maybe that will make them think about the (well deserved) money to be earned from a more permanent reunion.

What an sweet surprise! One small quibble w/the otherwise excellent summary, tho. I believe the song "Bad Co." "appropriated" from Mott via Mr. Ralphs was "Ready for Love", albeit w/a different bridge. Small point, really, as after 35 years, both rock quite sufficiently today. For those who'd like a bit more, I recently read in one of the UK rags that there will be a "one-off" Mott reunion this October in London. No tour planned, but if we all show up and "make a big noise", who knows? Thanks again!

Bender was shades ahead of Mick Ralphs. Better guitarist, better personality, an obvious threat to steal the show from Hunter. But according to the band he was no great shakes as a songwriter contributor, that, and an according to them (but NOT me) a lacklustre initial solo on what became "Saturday Gigs" spelled his doom in the band. Methinks if he hung in there and stayed long enough to play alongside John Fiddler in the anti-Mott Mott British Lions, they could've been a contender to Foreigner, where Bender's Spooky Tooth successor Mick Jones was already (and still is) achieving great fame. Bender should be the guitar player in those London Reunion shows. Ralphs, great as he is too, should stick to Bad Company - I heard Rodgers is back with them.

what a shame. One of my favorite bands. Love to have a full concert some day. Still great quality. Spinal Tap has nothing on Mott the Hoople.
