Concert Summary

Like a tidal wave of total weirdness, the Mothers of Invention splashed down on the Fillmore West for a series of shows in November of 1970, then washed back into the seedy ocean of L.A., leaving the landscape forever changed (or at least confused and slightly offended).

Not to be outdone by the art school drop-outs and buck-skin fringe contingent then wandering the Sunset Strip, Frank Zappa had been steadily releasing incredibly strange…entire summary

It was George Duke. There was a documentary called Holland Doc. They used footage from this concert and George was in it.

Hey a bit of ZPZ knocking going on here! I for one am looking forward to the Manchester show next week. Frank's gone we all know that but at least Dweezil is working hard to perpetuate the live concept. Sure its never going to be like 1970, but Franks disbanded the touring band a long time before he died, so even he knew it was never going to be repeated. By the way anonymous(!) thanks for the link to the Zappa Chronology site, fantastic stuff.

This is the sickest version of call any vegetable I've heard. Zappa is a true genius.

Lovely stuff, one of the best Zappa/Mothers combinations - especially How can I be (such?) a Fool. Suggestion: if you want to experience live Zappamusic with all the humour/sense of fun and master musicianship? Forget Dweezil's overpriced stadium shows go see the Grandemothers with Napoleon plus Roy Estrada and Don Preston - while they still can.

Hey kids, no more reading websites to see who's where...now you can merely LISTEN to the show instead of arguing about it...you will hear quite clearly at 2:00 of Daddy the name of Mr. George Duke. Easy! Hell of a show and soooo far beyond the musically weak '66 Mothers concert here--like another universe beyond. This is tight and focussed and a full-on vaudeville-type experience, with some great social commentary plus amazingly solid music from a very well-rehearsed band. No one else ever came close to this level of music and humor together, except FZ himself, who peaked around Apostrophe, to these ears. The Vegetables here is absolutely classic! Completely unique music from a true weirdo, in the best sense of the word. (Btw, I saw ZPZ with Napoloeon in '06 and he blew everyone away, even rockstar posers Bozzio and Vai. Dweezil never mentioned his Dad's name once the entire night, just tried to copy his licks and act like it was his show. Pretty sad tribute except for NMB, who embodied the sense of fun and zany funk that made Zappa's best music truly great.) There was only one Zappa, and this show is a good example of what made him one of a kind.

According to the Zappa Chronology Site (which is exhaustive and wonderful), at the time of this gig, it WAS George Duke who was in the band. The Mothers: FZ--guitar, vocals Howard Kaylan--vocals Mark Volman--vocals George Duke--keyboards, trombone Ian Underwood--keyboards, alto sax Jeff Simmons--bass, vocals Aynsley Dunbar--drums http://globalia.net/donlope/fz/index.html

this line-up started touring in June, 1970. simmons left before the shooting of 200 Motels in early 71 (replaced by pons) and duke split after the shooting (replaced by bob harris and then don preston). this line-up is on chunga's revenge (mostly), released fall '70...jabfla was released in 72. it's confusing but who cares...it's so good!

are you sure george duke was in this version of the band? i think it's don preston. this was recorded around the same time as "just another band from la." which also credits jim pons on bass. i think jeff simmons was later, on 200 motels, and i think george duke joined after that, when frank started his more overt jazz phase. (after he fell of the stage in europe.) just my notes and recollections and reconstructions from what i gather and have read.
