Concert Summary

One of the most intriguing figures of the blues revival of the early-1960s was Mississippi John Hurt, hailing from the small Delta town of Avalon. Born in 1892, Hurt was a lifelong farmer who, like contemporaries such as Blind Lemon Jefferson, Charley Patton and Leadbelly, predated the blues genre. A "songster" in the truest sense, Hurt's repertoire included folk ballads, work songs, spirituals, ragtime numbers, and his own interpretations of popular songs of the era, in addition to the blues. Hurt initially learned to appreciate music and guitar playing from William Carson, a teacher at…entire summary

I've loved MJH's music since the late sixties- I so wish I had seen him live. I had to get him second hand through Taj Mahal. Funny thing, I recently bought the 1928 recordings and found I didn't like them as much as the ones towards the end of his life. His advanced age seems to add a wisdom and gravity to the music that is missing in the earlier ones.

please POST MORE M.J.H.!! I love this show! This is the first time I ever heard him (on recording.) Doc Watson has talked about him at a bunch of his shows, and I'm not sure why I didn't check him out sooner. I see why Watson was inspired to continue playing guitar.

This recording is wonderful. But, I swear I played autoharp with John Hurt at this performance. We had just played at the Berkeley Folk Festival and I drove him down for this gig at the Ash Grove. I thought I played both sets, but apparently I didn't cuz I don't hear myself on this recording. Rats, I was really hoping. Alice Stuart
