Concert Summary

The discography of Mingo Lewis reads like a virtual who's who of the jazz/rock-fusion scene. A world-class percussionist, Lewis was recruited by Santana in the early 1970s and went on to perform and record with Chick Corea's groundbreaking Return to Forever, Al DiMeola and many others. Lewis has enjoyed an extremely distinguished career as a critical percussive element in some…entire summary

Excuse me...I meant "suburban" Also, there's not enough Fee goin' on in this version of the Tubes.

I always thought the Tubes experiment with Mingo Lewis's bongos was...well..Hmmmm...different. But since I think multiculturalism sucks dick, I guess you could say it's just not my thing. The Tubes themselves are great so this is nothing against them, I just perfer the surban whitebread version of this band more.

To the guys at Wolfgang's Vaults", listen to this show. I assume it's Mingo Lewis doing all the announcements, but he introduces the band as the guys you have listed.

Unknown song is an early version of "flight over Rio " as recorded by Al DiMeola on Elegant Gypsy. "Frankincense" is also known as "Race with Devil on Spanish Highway" also on Elegant Gypsy.

Anonymous guitar player - would you mind giving us a little more info? Is that the personnel for this particular concert? Let us know whatever you'd like so we can make sure things are correct on the site (either here or write to concerts@wolfgangsvault.com). Thanks for listening and for the comment. Cheers!

Mingo, I just found this website and enjoyed listening to some of the tracks... I met you through Carlos and we played together when I played drums for AUM... Great to see how well you did over the years... Steve Bowman

For a short time I played guitar for Mingo back in those early '70's days...I got the audition through my good friend drummer David Logeman (Frank Zappa, Gino Vanelli)...I passed the audition, got the gig. I left the band shortly before Mingo recorded his first album for Columbia. I think Michael Kapitan played keys, Eric McCann?/Bass, David Logeman/Drums, Mingo/percussion and myself on guitar...funny to find this recording, as I have old cassettes of those rehearsals I did with the band.

Am I the only one who recognizes "Race with Devil on Spanish Highway, by Al Dimeola (Casino)" as a note-for-note rip off of frankincense? Al DiMeola had Mingo Lewis on his records. I can only hope Mingo got some cash for what became a "hit" for Al.Chuck Burgi rips it up . I saw him with Brand X and more recently with Billy Joel. Mingo Lewis is incredible and was a smart man putting this band together.

Burgi played with Rainbow in the mid 80s, while Thrall replaced Howe in Asia aroung 1990.
