Concert Summary

The discography of Mingo Lewis reads like a virtual who's who of the jazz/rock-fusion scene. A world-class percussionist, Lewis was recruited by Santana in the early 1970s and went on to perform and record with Chick Corea's groundbreaking Return to Forever, Al DiMeola and many others. Lewis has enjoyed an extremely distinguished career as a critical percussive element in some of the most memorable music within…entire summary

Awesome!!! James Mingo Lewis got his start with Santana on the album "Caravanserai," and potentially on the album "Carlos Santana and Buddy Miles Live." He also played with Al Di Meola. Here, he combines the classic sound of early Jazz Fusion (like later Miles Davis, Al Di Meola, Return To Forever, Weather Report, etc.) with the classic sound of Santana with that Latin-Rock-Jazz fusion thing from the mid 1970's, along with his unique sound. Now if you were to look at most Jazz Fusion, and pretty much most Jazz in general (with the exception with the Big Band from the 1920's and 1930's) you very rarely hear vocals. This is why this is unique. It's probably more rock influence than most Jazz, particularly Jazz fusion.

Gatestudios is right it is a close variation of Als Race with the devil on Spanish Highway but its still cool Since Pat and Al played together in Stomu Yamashtas Go I think creative licence is in effect.

Pat Thrall is an amazing guitar player I wish there was mor of his work available.

I think most of the intelligent DiMeola fans acknowledge this Mingo Lewis ensemble had alot to do with his (DiMeola's) early solo material 3 to 4 years later. I prefer to listen to Thrall than DiMeola. This stage of ML rolls. Big impact on the music scene of the day.

Excuse me...I meant "suburban" Also, there's not enough Fee goin' on in this version of the Tubes.

  • SavagebongosSacCa | Thursday, February 26, 2009 | 1:11 pm

I always thought the Tubes experiment with Mingo Lewis's bongos was...well..Hmmmm...different. But since I think multiculturalism sucks dick, I guess you could say it's just not my thing. The Tubes themselves are great so this is nothing against them, I just perfer the surban whitebread version of this band more.

To the guys at Wolfgang's Vaults", listen to this show. I assume it's Mingo Lewis doing all the announcements, but he introduces the band as the guys you have listed.

Unknown song is an early version of "flight over Rio " as recorded by Al DiMeola on Elegant Gypsy. "Frankincense" is also known as "Race with Devil on Spanish Highway" also on Elegant Gypsy.

Anonymous guitar player - would you mind giving us a little more info? Is that the personnel for this particular concert? Let us know whatever you'd like so we can make sure things are correct on the site (either here or write to concerts@wolfgangsvault.com). Thanks for listening and for the comment. Cheers!
