Concert Summary

Impressed by their opening performances a week or so earlier, Graham invited Bloomfield, Gravenites, Naftalin and friends to headline over The Byrds and Pacific Gas and Electric for three more nights the following week.

"Born In Chicago" is a different arrangement than the Butterfield Blues Band version. In fact, Bloomfield lays low throughout this song, letting the horn section lead the way. At times this approaches free jazz, but the rhythm section keeps it grounded in the blues idiom. "Big City Woman" is another…entire summary

Growing up in Hyde Park, Chicago, during the 60's, one of my fondest memories was sitting on the lawn of some frat house and listening to the sounds of the P.B.B.B. emanating from within.

What can be said? The man was brilliant. This is a true BLUES MAN. Bloomfield was both a very gifted and extremely dedicated practitioner of the art form, and BOY, could he sing and play! TAKE NOTE: All you later day "Blues Slingers," "Rock Refugees Turned Blues Dabblers," and still others playing your watered down Sam Cooke and Otis Redding rip off cheap imitations.... PLEASE TAKE HEED, Bloomfield is watchin', and he is gonna come back and kick ALL your asses! Now quite your bullshittin'.

Hard to place this exact show but was there as always. He was not late..........he was not ready! And with this gang.....and they knew each other well....they knew when each one was ready......and you don't need to figure that out. MB would rip the shit out of cuts and leave the horns and vocals to fill in while he ............caught his breath. Very catastropic dude. Had no in-between. All out or not there.

Great stuff: he was always good and got the US Guitar Hero status in 1965 after playing lead guitar on Dylan's "Like a Rolling Stone." Following his death in mid-seventies, I remember reading Rolling Stone article (perhaps early seventies interview) where he said that when he first saw Hendrix play live in sixties he was transfixed and put down his axe and couldn't play for a whole year. Clearly, he gleaned a lot and came back in this set on fire!

At one of the shows this weekend, engineers were recording Bloomfield and he was "late". The engineers set their levels by recording the opening acts, and the Byrds played for an hour and a half. The tape was discovered in the Columbia vaults about 30 years later, and released on the cd The Byrds Live At The Fillmore February 1969.
