Concert Summary

A trumpeter of extraordinary power, particularly in the high register, Maynard Ferguson first came to the attention of the jazz public as a pyrotechnic soloist with Stan Kenton's Innovations Orchestra during the early '50s. He formed his own big band in 1957 and debuted his big brassy well-oiled machine at the Newport Jazz Festival the following year. Ferguson's Friday afternoon set at the 1959 Newport Jazz Festival was an uncanny display of energy, chops and abandon melded with thoroughly polished charts by arrangers Don Sebesky and Slide Hampton. It's really great to hear Maynard's band with Wayne Shorter on tenor. He was only with the band for 4 weeks and this is a rare treat.
I played drums with Maynard in 1974-5 and recorded "CHAMELEON" (Columbia).
He was a powerhouse but this band was among my favorites.
    More Newport Jazz please.

i make track 3 (intro to newport) about 24 seconds and track 4 (newport itself) to be close to about 9:30 - so the whole set clocks in arounf 45:15 or so

Note a very young Don Ellis in the trumpet section, who would lead a phenomenal big band in the sixties. Don Sebesky created many fine arrangements for Buddy Rich's Big Band in the sixties as well.

Dreams can come true and having this Maynard Ferguson 1959 Newport Jazz Festival appearance was one of mine..A terrific concert with MF and the band at their best, but then they were always at their best in the late 50's and early 60's. 50 years later this music is just as fresh and swinging as it was then. I hope some of my other MF Newport dreams will also come true soon..I believe he made at least one appearance prior to this one in 58 and surely appeared in the early 60's..keep making out dreams a reality..Thanks so much...DP

Thank You! It will be a long time before anyone will come close to the range & style of Maynard. Saw him live several times in the late 70's early 80's he was always able to raise the roof no matter what the venue.
