Concert Summary

From her early 1960s jug band recordings to the present day, Maria Muldaur stands unique in her ability to transcend categorization. For over forty years, Muldaur has shared her deep love of roots music. By carefully selecting her repertoire from the best North American songwriters, she has encompassed the blues of the Mississippi Delta, New Orleans gospel and jazz, Western Swing, Appalachian bluegrass/country and everything in between. Best known for her 1973 hit, "Midnight At The Oasis," Muldaur has always been much more than a sexy one-hit wonder. Blessed with a voice that remains…entire summary

Long a Maria Muldaur fan, my favorite genre of hers is jazz, and this is a great concert! I wish someone had a recording of the concert she did at the Bottom Line when she was promoting her Transblucency album of Ellington songs...

This is phenomenal, and is now going to be played around here as often as Geoff & Maria's Sweet Potatoes album. I wish I could have both on CD.

WOW! I only knew of her and her "Oasis" hit but, of course as I expected based on the lineup of accompanying artists, this is pure, straight-up World-class jazz and she is a diva extraordinaire. I believe the guitar credit should read "MUNDELL LOWE" see: [ mundelllowe.com ] If you like virtuosos like Barney Kessel, Kenny Burrell, Grant Green, Herb Ellis, Joe, Pass, Jim Hall, and the like, you should check out his contributions to the art. I will definitely be investigating into the music of Maria after this!

I also have worked with Maria on several occassions, each time she brought something new to the table. As a Matter of fact, I drove Nick Milo from his last gig with Maria to his first gig with Tower of Power. Last I saw Maria, she had The Unfreakin' Believable Marty Grebb on Keys and saxophone along with this Wonderful Guitarist(John Woodhouse).. I think I still have her red lipstick embedded in one of my MD431's...

Doesn't get any better than to have Benny Carter playing. In the '70's we had the treat of Maria singing backup with the Grateful Dead. There is a small bar in Greenwich Village in NYC called Kenny's Castaways and we used to go there for our favorite, The Dave Perkins Band, and one night Maria came onstage and sang with Dave. She was from that neighborhood. And does anyone know what happened to Dave Perkins? Or have a live tape of his band?

This is a real treat and an upgrade on my tape of the same concert - checked via the spoken band intros - that BBC radio re-broadcast quite some years ago. Presumably because of the BBC introduction (which I didn't record), my notes at the time indicate it was a KBFH recording from the Orphem Theatre, Boston, MA, in Feb 1974. It had an additional final track, "Nobody's Fault But Mine". However, the opening announcer here clearly refers to The Troubadour. The very different backing band from usual makes the music especially interesting. I only saw Maria once, in a small club in Birmingham, UK, in 2000. Fantastic! Wish I'd been around for concerts in the 70's, if all the LPs and the shows in Wolfgang's Vault are anything to go by. ValleySalley - very nice shot on "Gospel Nights"... have a word with your friend and don't give up till we get that fine album into general circulation on CD!
