Concert Summary

Following the monumental success of the first Crosby, Stills & Nash album and its follow-up, Déjà vu, which added Neil Young to the equation, this volatile group again went their separate ways. During the latter part of 1971, Stephen Stills, who was a prolific songwriter at the time, began sessions at Criteria Studios in Miami for what was initially intended to be his…entire summary

The sound quality is not very good, but the content is fabulous.

I was lucky enough to see Stills and Manassas way back in 1972 at the Rainbow Theater in London during a vacation. It was gorgeous, pure joy on stage. Johnny's Garden has been and still is one of my favourite songs of all times. And when Stephen picks up the guitar he is still a master.

2 months ago I took my 25 year old son to see Stephen Stills in Milwaukee. I have been a Stills addict since I got out o the military in 69. We were seated 4-5 feet away from Stills. I had a big smile on for the next 2 1/2 hours. My son saw he wasn't using a pick (my son plays guitar) and couldn't believe how long he was playing (most concerts my son saw were 90 minutes, tops. I really wanted to hear "4 and 20". A fan yelled out for that song, but Stephen said, "I don't do that anymore." Ya Stills didn't look like the "Wodstock" cowboy, and ya his voice which was never perfect, still wasn't great, but then at 62 I realized, I wasn't the same either. My son and I loved the entire evening.

Finding this is a major thrill. I was lucky enough to see this band twice, including their first appearance at Madison Square Garden, which was a scorcher. Count me among those who describe their debut double-LP as an absolute masterpiece, and very possibly Stills' best work ever. I love cruising down the Interstate to "Right Now" and "The Treasure," two of the hardest rocking songs he ever penned. As stated in the notes here, his collaboration with Hillman was was superb, though in discussing that period with Chris a few years ago, he had little good to say about his former partner. Not that he badmouthed Stills, just that he felt more like an employee than a partner. Fiddler Byron Berline is in top form on the LP, and anyone passing through Oklahoma should stop in and pay him your respects at the Double Time Stop Fiddle Shop in Guthrie. He's as great a guy as he is a fiddler. I've seen Stephen solo about six times, CSN maybe 10 times, SN twice and CSNY thrice, and I have to say the first Manassas tour was the best of them all, landing in my all tie top ten shows, along with Neil's Rust Never Sleeps tour. (Others in my top 10 are the ARMS Concerts with Clapton, Beck and Page and MANY others, LIVE AID, Pink Floyd's Dark Side of the Moon tour at Saratoga Springs, Yes's Close to the Edge tour, Hot Tuna's Burgers tour at the Academy of Music, the Conspiracy of Hope benefit for Amnesty Int'l (which included Santana, Peter Gabriel, Jackson Browne, U2 and the very last Police concert in the 20th Century), Clapton's "August" tour at NYC nightclub, the name of which escapes me, and Jackson Browne acoustic solo at the Crystal Theater, Okemah Okla., benefitting the Woody Guthrie Folk Festival (Arlo was sitting directly behind us all night.)

I saw Manassas on July 23rd, 1972 at the Berkeley Community Theater. I was 15 and it was my very first concert of hundreds seen so far. They played most of their first album and just friggin SMOKED! A truly fantastic introduction to the world of live rock&roll!! Went to many shows at Winterland but missed this one. Thanks for putting it up here for us. Timo

Could someone re-mix this to bring everything else up to the same level as Stills Vocal track? Nice to have a SBD of this however...thanks!
