Mahogany Rush claims the swirling mists of rock legend as its genesis: while recovering in the hospital from a bad drug trip, Frank Marino, the man who would lead what became the band, was visited by the ghost of Jimi Hendrix. Marino picked up a guitar for the first time after leaving the hospital and magically played Hendrix riffs, or so the story says. Whether true or not, a Hendrix-influenced trio that included bassist Paul Harwood and drummer Jim Ayoub formed from the experience, and the Canadian metal outfit released a steady line of albums from 1972's Maxoom to 1979's Tales of the Unexpected. After the decade, Mahogany Rush changed its name to a much more simple moniker, Frank Marino.
