Concert Summary

Musicians that recorded and performed with Miles Davis during his early explorations into electric instrumentation inevitably went on to form bands of their own, but few were as adept or as influential as the Mahavishnu Orchestra, a globally diverse group formed by legendary English guitarist, John McLaughlin. I remember seeing them at the Nassau Colliseum the day before with Frank Zappa and Leo Kotke and being absolutely blown away. One of the greatest bands ever. Simply amazing.

MO was the bridge into jazz for a simple but openminded rock oriented audience that knew NOTHING about jazz - including myself.

I would be interested to know what people think are the five best MO concerts on here and why?

the only dream-version I know where the main theme is repeated 4 times instead of 3 times before changing to Jerry's solo !

Stunning. One of the greatest versions of 'The Noonward Race' I've heard (even though John makes a mistake in the middle). I'm trying to find all the live versions of the Noonward Race that I can.

The first time I heard John Mclaughling play was when the Tony Williams Lifetime opened for The Who at the Tea Party in Boston in 69 is my guess. This was an inspired booking by Don Law which didn't work. The audience was in Tommy land (not a bad palce to be) and was not able to relate to the tectonic shift that was to come. I was in the sound booth and our jaws dropped... we knew that Mclaughlin had a voice and power that could not be denied. And so it was. This set of all I have heard here is the mostamazing. I was at the Orpehuem show and this is a notch higher. It is not just the dexterity and speed, but for its soul that emerges. Enjoy.
