Concert Summary

When John McLaughlin formed the initial Mahavishnu Orchestra, the personnel included Jerry Goodman, a classically trained American rock musician, Jan Hammer, a Czechoslovakian keyboard player with a strong jazz background, Rick Laird, an Irish bass player with both jazz and rock experience, and Billy Cobham, a powerful and technically brilliant jazz drummer from Brooklyn whose style would completely redefine his instrument. Combining the improvisational elements of jazz with the volume and energy of rock music, this globally and musically diverse group brought elements of Far Eastern music,…entire summary

sorry Riverman, Dinky was working for Lou Reed on March 23rd so we don't have that recording.

Wow this show is funky! Do you have the spring of '73 from Winterland, I was there, and would love to hear it again

Anyone who bashes fusion is ignorant. Mahavishnu Orchestra is as good as music ever gets! Spectacular playing here as always!

Thanks for the interesting footnote about the Spectrum sessions being the next day. I love that album. It is a shame that fusion gets such a bad rap. This is some of the most mind blowing music ever made.

Interesting to hear Jan & Billy in Noonward Race limbering up for the "Spectrum" sessions in NY the following day. Another great show - thanks Wolfie!!

When the reviewer for this show said the MO had an off-night, he actually meant they originally had the night off, but found a venue to play as a headliner. Because they definitely are "on" here. I saw them two nights later (in Milwaukee) as an opener for Zappa and they didn't seem limited at all by time constraints of their set. Analogy (and maybe slight hyperbole, so forgive me if you read it as such): The Beatles hit at the right moment, as we were all waking from our national slumber (and shock) in the wake of the Kennedy assassination only two months before. In a musical vein, John McLaughlin and the Mahavishnu Orchestra, in the era of a seemingly infinite number of great guitarists, re-awakened the possibilities of the electric guitar through sheer energy, unique chordal structures, and emotion that had been left in the ashes after the death of Hendrix. And that is taking nothing away from other phenomenal guitarists of the era such as Duane Allman, Carlos Santana, Peter Green, Albert King, Rory Gallagher, Alvin Lee, etc. If you had the opportunity to be in the audience, in an enclosed auditorium, listening to the "Birds of Fire" era of MO, you will know the energy that exploded in that room... just an onslaught of sound coming from all directions. Unforgetable!

Another 'You Know, You Know' is always a great event! But why is this concert, seemingly alone among the Dawson Sound MO recordings, not available for purchase?

Saw the 2d incarnation of the Orchestra at Washington, D.C.'s Lisner Auditorium (Jean-Luc Ponty/Gayle Moran/Ralphe Armstrong). Jan Hammer was gone, but it was still one of the best concerts I ever attended.
