Concert Summary

By 1973, the final year of the classic Mahavishnu Orchestra lineup, they had firmly established their reputation and were now a headline act. Their debut album, The Inner Mounting Flame, and its follow-up, Birds Of Fire, had mesmerized musicians and listeners alike and they had become one of the most exciting bands on the planet. Combining the improvisational elements of jazz with the volume and energy of rock music, the group also brought elements of Far Eastern, R&B, and Classical music to the table. The Mahavishnu Orchestra created music that was often intricate and…entire summary

Are there any recordings of the Mahavishnu Orchestra's concerts that took place on Marquette University's campus? I ask because my parents both witnessed them there and I can find nothing of the sort even on record.

it's really funny, when Jerry starts his chorus of "celestial terrestrial" John hits the "A"-string one bar too early -(at 2.02) But that doesn't matter because all are working as one. This piece is complicated like hell !

This is epic stuff. Is there any modern fusion as good as this? One tends to doubt it.

Maybe it's a coincidence, maybe not. About two and a half years ago, the Vault site posted a Jeff Beck show from Milwaukee (May 1975) and listed the show's venue as the Milwaukee Auditorium. I sent a notice of correction that the show actually took place at the Riverside Theatre, as I was present at the show. They immediately corrected the error. I further went on to mention that Beck had been on the bill with the third and last true edition of the Mahavishnu Orchestra and suggested it would be nice if they could locate some recordings of the Mahavishnu Orchestra (especially the classic lineup with Billy Cobham), most notably the "Birds of Fire" tour. And now, over the last year, they have added 29 shows from the period. Who would have thunk... Incredible! And thanks to the Wolfgang's Vault folks... Regarding this Milwaukee show (of which I was also present in 1973), I also became a believer that night, having come to see Frank Zappa and the Mothers and not knowing anything of the Mahavishnu Orchestra or John McLaughlin. It began in typical Mahavishnu fashion: bowed silence, then the gong and then the first odd sounding chords on McLaughlin's double-necked Gibson from "Birds of Fire." I still think of this show (both Mahavishnu and Zappa) as probably the greatest concert of my concert going youth. You will notice I mentioned "Birds of Fire" which is absent here, so this is obviously not a complete show. The Beloit (WI) show seems to be pretty close to the setlist I remember and is also a knockout show. The tour is also notable, because as mentioned, Jean Luc-Ponty was touring with Zappa on this tour. A year later he would be a member of the Mahavishnu Orchestra as part of the expanded group (with string section) on the "Apocalypse" tour.

Real shame that a band like Mahavishnu Orchestra is so poorly documented. Do any recordings of them exist? Anyone know?
