Concert Summary

Musicians that recorded and performed with Miles Davis during his early explorations into electric instrumentation inevitably went on to form bands of their own, but few were as adept or as influential as the Mahavishnu Orchestra, a globally diverse group formed by legendary English guitarist, John McLaughlin. Combining the improvisational elements of jazz with the volume and energy of rock music, the group…entire summary

What fire!! Even though the "heads" of the tunes aren't crisp due to lightning-fast tempos, it's nice to hear the M.O. a bit looser, more improvisational than some other gigs. Everybody in the group has more than enough room to stretch out on their solos. What a lucky audience, to feel this energy!!

Wat a great line up and a super set list. The mention of Weather Report makes me want to stay up and hear them too.

I was at this show in Ithaca too...as I recall Weather Report opened...amazing stuff...I saw many shows at Bailey Hall, and i always told people that they beat the acoustics there with sheer volume...lol:)

I was also at this show, visiting friends in Ithaca. I was thrilled to see Mahavishnu in such a lovely venue. And LOUD is an understatement. I'm a drummer, so I'm used to a high decibel environment. But at some point it felt that the sheer pressure of moving that much air was forcing tears out of my eyes. For my 19-year old ears, it was almost too much virtuosity, but thrilling, nonetheless.

They actually did 2 full and separate concerts this night . By the end of the evening, it was difficult to tell whether McLaughlin or Hammer was soloing! I was there for both shows.....amazing/exhausting. Epic in every sense of the word.

We were at this concert, sitting in the 3rd row of Baily Hall about 15 feet from John. The acoustics were great. It had been designed and build before amplification, when voices had to carry from the stage to the last row. The band came out and without any introductions simply began the first song. They blazed along in an unbelievable swirling full-bore maelstrom. After what seemed like forever, the frenzy came to a sudden synchronized stop and band bowed slightly to the audience. But the entire venue of several thousand people sat dead silent. No applause, nothing. You could hear people breathing. The music and musicianship had been so overwhelming everyone was stunned. After about 10 seconds of silence I remember John furtively checking out the rest of his band mates with a "Did we just jump the shark?" look on his face. At that point, the hall went berserk, people yelling, screaming, jumping on their seats applauding. The evening got even better from there. And for the record, they were LOUD. One of the truly great concerts I've attended.

i think the sheer intensity of this band was the reason they split so early, how could they possibly have kept it up, the cream of the fusion world
