Concert Summary

Most of the musicians orbiting Miles Davis during his early explorations into electric instrumentation inevitably were inspired to form bands of their own. Few were as adept , intense, or influential as the Mahavishnu Orchestra, a globally diverse group that included guitarist John McLaughlin and drummer Billy Cobham, both alumni of Miles Davis sessions. Combining the improvisational elements of jazz with the volume and energy of rock music, the group also brought elements of Far Eastern, R&B, Blues and Classical music to the table. The music they created was often intricate and complex,…entire summary

now this is (capital letters) ROCK AND ROLL! it may also be referred to as fusion, but this stuff rocks! my favorite times are when any two pull off these amazing duets. it's like the band has one brain.

I was 7 years too young at the time. I was watchin the Monkees on TV. So, never saw a live show, but bought all the records when I first heard the stuff at 17 years old. All my folks thought I had gone a little strange. Wasn't Lynard Skynard y'know. I've carried these tunes in my head a long time now. Still play the old vinyl. Met folks since who can hear the flower opening like I did. Beautiful. Thanks.

I think drumsticks were invented FOR Billy Cobham, I've seen him live many times, the last was with Jazz Is Dead..as a drummer myself, I am humbled in his presence. And that John McLaughlin guy is pretty darn good too..made a mistake in 1975 and saw MahuOrch straight..they sounded merely INCREDIBLE.. Enjoy this concert !!!

I was at this show, so cool to come across it here! Just as good as I remembered (ok except maybe for the out-of-tune 12 string at start heh heh). Opening act was supposed to be some labelmates of MO I'd never heard of called Aerosmith but they cancelled so it was just MO trance music washing over us all eve. Still got the ticket stub- Adelbert Gym at CWRU, face value $4.50! First time I saw em was the oft-booted 4/72 show also in Cleve opening for Procul Harum and West Bruce & Laing. Only other time saw original MO was in Aug 72 in Akron OH between Eagles & Yes- no tape of that yet....
