Concert Summary

The initial classic lineup of the Mahavishnu Orchestra lasted less than three years and only released two studio albums and one live recording during this era, but these recordings had a profound effect, redefining the jazz/rock fusion movement. Combining the improvisational elements of jazz with the volume and energy of rock music, the group created music that was often intricate and complex, performed by musicians whose virtuosity thrilled audiences, musicians and critics alike.

Wolfgang's vault is the best place to go for this unknown Mahavishnu stuff ! I never knew before of those live-gigs. Thanks a lot. What I always miss is a live-version of "Lila's dance" I never heard this piece live.

Indeed this show was a mind-blowing experience at Beloit College. I was there and I still rave about this show. I know I went to the concert straight and came out with such a buzz without even a toke! Truly a mind-altering experience of the first degree! Thank you for sharing this with us as moments of this kind of magic are rare in this world.

MVO are without a doubt the best band of their type EVER, they did a few gigs here in England in the summer of 1973 still with the original line- up. they came to UK without aPA system & their main gig was to be supporting Yes, outdoors @ Crystal Palace in south London. Yes had aggreed to lend MVO their PA system though when Yes realised how good they were. They refused to lend them their PA system. All the bands that day played from a semi acoustic half dome situated on a small island in the middle of a lake. Because Yes went back on their word it was nearly impossible to hear MVO & then Yes played & could be heard all over south London. Thanks to Wolfgangs Vault we have been blessed with concerts of the original lineup we did not know existed ! But remember that the MVO were the next truly cosmic music after Hendrix but it took 5 of them to do it! Mickey Toone, Penzance, UK.Ps please keep them coming guys?

Hi again Skilo. I must correct my previous message. They did play at the Stock Pavilion on the U of WI campus in Madison, just as you remember, but that was two nights prior on March 19th. They played 3 different Wisconsin campuses 3 days in a row. Thus some confusion. This one is indeed the March 21st gig in Beloit.

Skilo, the U of W gig that I think you are referring to occurred on the previous day, March 20th.

This performance took place at the Stock Pavilion on the U of WI campus in Madison. We raved about this show for months. The MO were completely in a class of their own.

Umm...not that it's a big deal. But the University of Wisconsin is not in Beloit. My guess is that this is a show from Beloit College, as the MU was doing several small liberal arts colleges on this tour (I saw them at Kenyon College within weeks of this show).
