Concert Summary

By the time Lynyrd Skynyrd played this sold-out show at San Francisco's Winterland ballroom, they had become the unmistakable kings of Southern Rock. Spearheaded by charismatic frontman, Ronnie Van Zant, the group had taken southern boogie from the swamps and brought it to the masses.

There is an enormous amount of energy and power in the multiple guitar mix of the band, and that is clearly apparent when they launch into solos on these songs. The group had built a solid following via AOR radio by 1975, and songs like "Sweet…entire summary

This was billed as an all Southern Rock show ( I even have a photo of the marquis), Marshall Tucker Band headlined in support of their best LP ( the "live" one ), Skynyrd had just finished recording "Nuthing Fancy" (it wouldn't be released for another 3-4 months), L.A. then San Francisco were the first times they played this material to a live audience, the BEST of very few "live" versions of "On The Hunt"!!!

I was at this concert, my first I believe at the ripe age of 14. Didn't Charlie Daniels Play with them?!? I was hooked and saw most of the Day on the Greens, and Santana at small little clubs. But this the all time best. It was great to find your site!!

I went to this concert. I had gotten my driver's license less than 30 days before and it was the first Winterland concert of many for me. The one problem was that Billy Powell was in an accident just before so they played the entire concert without a keyboard player. The opening to Freebird used a guitar solo instead of the organ/electric piano. Probably why keyboard-centric songs such as Freebird and Tuesday's Gone are not included.
