Concert Summary

Just three and a half months before the fateful plane crash that killed Skynyrd members Steve Gaines, his sister, backing vocalist Cassie Gaines (of the Honkettes), and lead vocalist Ronnie Van Zandt, Lynyrd Skynyrd played this 4th of July weekend program in Oakland.

While this is only a partial recording of the show, two of the three songs are probably the ones you would skip to anyway: "Sweet Home Alabama" and the legendary closing track that has inspired legions of concert-going yokels to make millions of ironic requests over the years, "Free Bird." The first track is an excerpt of…entire summary

As much as of a Peter Frampton fan, they were the best band on the stage that day!

I have to say as a Manc from UK, that in the mid 70's lots of British bands led the way, Thin Lizzy, Led Zeppelin, Yes, Genesis(the proper one with Gabriel) with the Stones and The Who on the wain. I saw all of them, but for that ability to be true earthy players when I saw Skynyrd their ability to move an audience, let the concert wander through the different styles of the various now classic tracks, Skynyrd then were really right up there. (and thats why with no soul the subsiquent imitations could never compete

I was in Right field after skynyrd frampton came on but we were all blown away by that time. Unforgetable and heart wrenching when we heard the news of the crash, we were all so stuned, after the concert of our lives

I was "on the green" in more ways than one on that day :)
After The Outlaws blew me away with "Green Grass and High Tides" I didn't think LS could top THAT... They did with Free Bird... I left during Frampton, too!

I was lucky enough to be at this show on the 2nd. It was only the second concert I had been to. The Outlaws led off followed by Santana. Both were great. But then Skynyrd came out and it got even better. I remember Ronnie standing on stage with a bottle of "Jack". When they finished Free Bird it was like the concert was over. Frampton was very popular at that time "Frampton Comes Alive" but by his second song you could see people streaming out of the stadium. Frampton did not stand a chance following Skynyrd. I was heart broken when I heard about the plane crash. Over the years I had a few chances to see the new Skynyrd but did not go. I wanted to remember the real thing. I think it was 2008 I was in South Carolina and Skynyrd was playing with the Allman Brothers in Savannah, Ga. I had to go, getting to see the Allman Brothers & Skynyrd in a small venue in the deep South was too good to pass up. Great show, both bands rocked the house. But it still was not the same. RIP
