Concert Summary

Just three and a half months before the fateful plane crash that killed Skynyrd members Steve Gaines, his sister, backing vocalist Cassie Gaines (of the Honkettes), and lead vocalist Ronnie Van Zandt, Lynyrd Skynyrd played this 4th of July weekend program in Oakland.

While this is only a partial recording of the show, two of the three songs are probably the ones you would skip to anyway: "Sweet Home Alabama" and the legendary closing track that has inspired legions of concert-going yokels to make millions of ironic requests over the years, "Free Bird." The first track is an excerpt of…entire summary

My first big concert, my friend and I rode across the Bay Bridge on a small motorcycle, and the stories are true. Outlaws were great, Santana also magical, and Skynyrd really tore it up with the huge closer of Freebird. I remember Frampton came out and yes people were throwing stuff but it was chic fans in the front. I turned around to see people flooding up the stairways to the exits. True story, also I took my first bong hit

Someone was arguing the fact about "owning the show" but you had to be there and I was. I also thought it was 4th of July and not the 2nd but maybe it was. The Lynyrd Skynyrd movie has the video footage of Freebird and may list it on the 4th. Anyway...... The Outlaws were cool. Santana was good compared to the year before with that lineup. They had grown since Amigos I felt and were heading toward Moon Flower and later Inner Secrets. But Skynyrd was just in great form and it was hard to be dynamic in that outdoor arena. They just blew doors. Frampton was there the year before and did good sharing the bill with UFO,Fleetwood Mac and Gary Wright.(I was 13 and it was my 1st big show). But he came out opening with an acoustic set "All I Wanna Be Is BY Your Side". It just never went uphill. And then a fourtyfive minute version of "Do you feellike we do" in which he got on the drum kit climbed up a tower or riser and said "What if I fell and got hurt"? and "Do you like me"? lol I have a good memory. Poor Peter, the success and coke etc also the sophosticated bay area fans weren't dumb and they weren't buying it. It was in the newspapers the next day. People were leaving throughout his set. I even had to leave eventually. He later did a Rolling Stone article about his whole career decline. We saw it first hand. And The Bay liked to Rock. "I'm in You" wasn't going to get it which was the new single. Not his choice possibly. My favorite stuff was up until the live and those live presentations. All recorded in The Bay Area and Upstate NY. But back to Skynyrd....They were bad ass and they rocked the place. I think there may be the whole show perhaps somewhere on video in a vault. Hope they release it. I have had the fortunate experience 10 yrs ago of staying in Jacksonville and meeting and knowing Ronnie Van Zant's daughter Melody and wife Judy and Judy's current husband drummer/producer Jim Jennes. I got a good reality of life there decades later by the beach and inland. Viva Lynyrd Skynyrd!!!

I was at this concert as well! No Foghat, just foggy minds :-)

This was my first concert as well. Living in San Jose, and going up the freeway to the Coliseum. I know the years have gone by, and I was only 13 at the time of this show, but I seem to remember Foghat being at this show as well, but no one has mentioned them. Oh well, maybe it is just the clouds in my mind hazing concerts together. I dont remember any band sucking, but then again, I dont remember a lot from that concert, or even any of those days, just too many things have happened since then.

The Outlaws, Santana, Peter Frampton, & Lynard Skynard. I loved the whole show. Lynard Skynard was SMOKING & it ROCKED!

OK, maybe I'm wrong, maybe it was actually July 2, 1977... For decades I've been thinking this was a 4th of July show... The ticket stubs don't lie, I stand corrected... Bless you all, you music fanatics...

That day on the green was also my very first concert. The start of my southern rock life. I think we wore out the live Skynyrd album from playing it so much. After the plane wreck a good part of southern rock died. And yes it was July 2nd 1977 because I still have my ticket stub.

It's funny when people say this or that group "owned" a show. It's all just a matter of personal preference. Personally i would have left after Santana. Festival shows rarely have lineups that keep everybody in the crowd happy. I would also rather see Frampton than Skynyrd, but that's just me.. :)

Yes, I was at this show (7/4/'77), and L.S. was great, so was Santana earlier in the afternoon... The Vault info has the date incorrect, it was not 7/2, but absolutely the 4th of July! And mvaphoto is correct about folks throwing stuff at Frampton, he sucked, and people were streaming out by the thousands after Skynyrd. True story...
