Concert Summary

As the 1970s began, aspiring singer-songwriter Kenny Loggins had begun establishing himself as a staff writer, contributing songs to The Nitty Gritty Dirt Band among others, before being signed to Columbia as a solo artist. Former Bufallo Springfield and Poco member, Jim Messina was brought in to produce the first album sessions. The two hit it off so well that before long they were actively collaborating on material and considering…entire summary

I saw them at Fraze Pavilion this past September, and my gosh, what a show. One of the keys to their amazing live sets is that they surround themselves with stellar musicians. Another is their 'getting out of the way', letting these musicians shine in an ensemble. Say what you will about the songs - some of which are among the best in the rock era. The band interplay, the arrangements, the all-out jams are spectacular. Some words about Messina's visage: let's face it, folks, he's getting up there. He is an official old-fart AARP Medicare recipient, like some of us. It was 30 to 40 years ago that he was young and in shape. But you have to admit, he still has his chops. If you're contrasting his demeanor with Kenny's, well OK. Kenny still has the personality and the stage presence he's always had. Jimmy is much more a 'technical' musician. Regardless, based on the DVD from a few years ago and their current tour, it is still worth seeing and listening to them. Thanks, guys!

There are other groups from this era that I enjoy more, but they weren't all that great live. For all the talk about CSNY's harmonies, they really gave a sloppy live performance. America had some really nice songs, but they just weren't good enough musicians for a compelling live show. But these guys really were great live. I saw them in Pine Knob in the summer of 1974 and they really blew me away. This Berkeley concert is probably pretty close to what I experienced. They have great backing people and terrific arrangements. Kenny Loggins has a great voice and it all started with some really good home-made songs. Thanks Loggins and Messina.

Gee, he no longer enjoys playing some insipid old songs from 40 years ago? You should have asked for your $12.50 back.

Good show. But I agree with RR39 that Messina no longer enjoys what he does so well, just take a look at their new dvd.

With all due respect to rickrock39, in defense of Jimmy Messina, I saw the 2005 reunion tour and he did a wonderful job. I know, as a musician, I've had some off nights. It doesn't mean that I don't love playing any longer, just that I didn't at that moment.

I just saw Jim Messina with POCO in a venue that holds 300 people. I came away with one very strong feeling from that show.....and that is, Jim Messina doesnt love to play Rock N Roll any longer. He never broke a smile and it showed in his music. On the other hand, Kenny Loggins always has a smile in is voice and that shows too. I have seen both Loggins and Messina together and alone more times that I care to count. Always a great evening of Rock N Roll.....listening to this show brings back all the great memories. When I saw the Loggins and Messina reunion show a few years back, and I mentioned to people that I was going to this reunion show...NO ONE under 30 had even heard of Loggings and Messina. This band will always make me smile.
