Concert Summary

Early rock guitarist Link Wray has the distinction of being one of the only—if not the only—guitarist to have been banned from the radio for an instrumental song. The ominous and gritty slow blues number "Rumble" (1958) scared the hell out of radio programmers who were convinced that Wray was glamorizing juvenile delinquency and anti-social behavior. (Someone tipped them off that "Rumble" is a street term for gang-fight that was popularized by the musical West Side Story.) What DJs didn't realize was that Wray was breaking barriers for guitarists: He created his fuzzy reverb sound by…entire summary

this brings back some memories, i remember seeing them around this time at the wembley arena country and western festival that they use to hold over the Easter weekend every year, i use to get dragged there by my dad and his mates, thankfully if you didn't like whoever there was plenty to do in outside in the wings, all the stars use to do signings ect and looking back it was amazing how many legends of country i did see there, willie, Waylon,George Jones, dolly,Marty Robbins,Emmylou, you name them i would probably have seen them, but then they added a 3rd day, the monday, and started adding the up and coming or slightly left of centre acts, john hartford, Ozark mountain daredevils ect and boy did you find the narrow mindedness of your country crowd on that day! if it ain't "he left me" in the traditional sense, boy did they not like it one bit, at the time I'd just got into rock music in a big way so a day like this was great for me, i don't think the Ozarks have ever returned, but when these 2 guys came on stage and started it was just stunned silence, after the first number had finished it went from silence to booing, people walking out demanding refunds, "this ain't country!" by the time the 2nd number had finished the place went to about 80 per cent empty, i loved it and i got to hear rumble up close and personal as well, now hearing this show and them saying "with got some boo'ers" just shows that how narrow eared some audience members are all over the world, why buy tickets people? if you don't like it don't go and let someone who would like see it go instead, after the show they were hanging around having a good laugh as to what had happened and seemed stunned that i got them to sign some programmes and things, i was the only one but they were really great guys that just seemed to love what they were doing and everything else didn't mean anything to them. as for this show i found it very listenable, love his voice and what hasn't been said about link? this is the better of the two shows at the bottom line but both are worth a listen, I've wasted an hour in worse ways than listening to this.
