Concert Summary

Of all the influential Texas blues men, none were more prolific than Sam "Lightnin'" Hopkins, who over the course of his career, recorded for nearly 20 different labels. However, he never strayed far from his trademark soulful and mournful sound that he perfected on both acoustic and electric guitar. Hopkins' intricate boogie riffs resonated with musicians and fans alike and…entire summary

I've always loved this cat. From the first time I heard a record of him, Larry Williams and Big Momma Thornton. Bitchin' south east Texas south western Louisana style of killer boogie guitar!! I think he ran circles around his contemporary Brownie McGhee...

I was privileged to be at this concert in '64 and Lightnin' was one of my early major influences on guitar; in fact, he may be why I started playing blues and still do to this day. Thanks to Wolfgang's Vault for making these great Ashgrove shows available to for us older folks to experience again and for younger folks to enjoy for the first time. It's a real service.

I'm not a big blues guy, but this is a charming show. Hopkins' way with the audience is nice to hear. His guitar playing transcends the usual blues cliches in some interesting ways. Cool voice. I can see why he was such a popular figure.
