I was either at this show or one a few years later at Fillmore East. Opening act was Donnie Hathaway/Roberta Flack, next Taj Mahal with Howard Johnson's brass band backing, then the amazing Leon up front on the grand piano. I was in the nosebleed section but had an amazing time hearing my idol from Mad Dogs & Englishmen and Leon's "Shelter People." Thanks for keeping a great memory alive. Now Fillmore East is an NYU building but N.B. I still play in a jazz band!

Caught Leon Russell at the Gram Parson's Guitar Pull in Parson's hometown of Waycross, GA 9/18/09. He looks like Gandalf in a Stetson, but his voice and keyboards are still strong and sweet.

Leon is one of the greatest. This is what rock piano is all about (take note youngsters, listen to Leon, not Billy or Elton or whoever else is out there these days). Rolling octaves, steeped in early New Orleans r&b, dressed in acid rock... pure power, loads of energy, all class! I agree with the previous comment, "He just flat out rocks." And he wrote some damn good songs, too. Please open the Vault, and give us some more from the Master of Space and Time.

Seen Leon many times and he just flat out rocks. Even today his energy level is beyond what is imaginable.

I also saw him at a local highway bar in Gulport MS last year. His step was a little slow but he could belt out his tune's like the old pro that he is. I am 51 and can recall seeing him in black and white on the Ed Sullivan show in 1964 when I was just a kid. I also saw him in Northhamtpton Ma back in the late 80's with Edgar Winter.
