Concert Summary

This recording captures the last half hour of an exciting set, when Lee Michaels headlined at Fillmore West days after the release of his forth album, Barrel. Arguably the most creative time of his stage career, Michaels belts out some of the best material from his first four albums. It's just Michaels on the B-3 and his cohort, Frosty on drums, but together they create a massive sound. Michaels wields the organ like Hendrix did the guitar; like a weapon unleashing barrages of sound, with Frosty pounding out the…entire summary

I was at fillmore west concert. Got backstage got a great view and remember Frosty in pajama bottoms with cowboy boots. Faces opened and it took forever for Lee to start show. Great show!!

I agree, Lee Michaels was (and would presume still is) a great talent: one of the finest rock keyboardists of all time, a great voice, good songwriter, and all around good entertainer. Hopefully he'll give us some new music soon. If you're interested in his present thoughts, he has a website: http://leemichaels.com/LeeMichaels.com/no_war.html

Its my understanding that Lee Michaels has been in the restaurant business in Southern California for the last few decades. I believe he had a place called Killer Shrimp, I think in Marina Del Rey. It might have had a few other locations, too, but I think its closed. Supposedly his health is not great, and he doesn't really like to talk about the "good old days", at least with kids who work in his restaurant. Too bad--he really is a unique talent.

It's not mentioned in the summary, but this show is from the first night of a four-night stretch in which Lee headlined, opening acts were Aum and Brethren. I'm assuming the opening sets as well as the other nights might be somewhere in the Vault?

He played the Hollywood Bowl on June 14, 1969, but Creedence was the headliner. The Grass Roots also played. I'm not aware of a show there with Iron Butterfly, but I'll look into it. Do you remember anything in particular about Lee's performance that night? Check out some of Jim McCrary's great photos of Lee, one from a Hollywood Bowl show: http://www.jimmccrary.com/pages/page4/index.htm

I saw Lee Michaels and Frosty at the Hollywood Bowl sometime in '69 or '70 I think. They openned for Iron Butterfly. Awesome show! Does anyone remember the exact date?

You're right on! Lee played the Fillmore and other Bill Graham promoted venues so often, that to only give us 27 minutes, a fragment of a show, is a crime! I would love to hear the New Year's Eve 1969/1970 show he headlined at the Olympic Auditorium (promoted by the great Bill Graham himself, under his birth name, Wolfgang Grajonca... I have the poster!). Or how about Lee's first show at the Fillmore on December 2-4, 1966. Oh, my! I'm salivating at the possibilities of what's locked up in the Vault. Please, give us something of substance to chew, something to nourish the soul!

Lee played a lot of shows between 1968-1978 and only one short segment of a show has showed up here. Dont get me wrong, I'm grateful for that. But with all the shows that Wolfgangs Vault has been releasing isn't it time to put a few more of Lee's shows out? How about a 1969 & a 1974 for starters? Please and thanks!! Any old Interviews would be cool as well!

I think the fans have spoken: We are seriously overdue for another Lee Michaels concert here! How about it?

I read he just got so fed up with teh music BUSINESS, and dealing with record companies, that didn't let him do what he needed to do for himself. Tailface was done to fufill a contract on a certain number of albums, his best one was teh Blue Face one, that guy can move them keys, amazing, his voice was out there.
