Concert Summary

Laura Nyro was a pioneer in combining the pure essence of folk-rock with gospel based blues that she vocalized with a powerful and haunting dispatch. Probably better known as a composer for other artists such as the Fifth Dimension, Barbra Streisand, Blood Sweat and Tears and Three Dog Night, Laura's own legacy of concert performances was sketchy at best.

LN was so incredible. I have been listening to her music on and off for the last 30 years or so. Have a few of her albums, but unless I dig them out I rarely get to hear her voice. Seems like a shame. Great to find this concert tonight. Thanks!

I had the good fortune to attend this concert. I was a kid on a first date with a girl named Debbie, whose parents owned a bagel shop on Avenue J in Brooklyn. Gosh, this brings back so many good memories of being young and warm feelings of having so many good memories. Like others have commented, she somehow kept me somewhat sane.

WOW, I JUST FOUND THIS WEB SITE, AND ALSO FOUND ONE OF MY FAVORITE ARTISTS. LAURA GOT ME THROUGH SOME ROUGH TEENAGE YEARS. I SAW HER A COUPLE OF TIMES AND WAS ABLE TO GET HER FAVORITE SANDWICH TO HER-TUNA FISH. I STILL HAVE ALL HER ALBUMS,AND ALL RELEASED CD'S. I LISTEN TO HER WHEN I WANT TO GET LOST IN MY MIND. SHE HAS LEFT US WITH SOME GREAT MUSIC,SHE WAS AHEAD OF HER TIME,AND NOT ENOUGH TIME FOR HER.

Laura is my goddess. What a contrast this early show is with her mid-70's and later "live" appearances! Here she moves from barely audible shy wood nymph to wailing banshee and back and forth. In this show, she exhibits exactly the same extreme dynamic range (making listening difficult sometimes) that characterize her earliest albums on Columbia. I love her later work more actually, but it is her early albums that establish her as a true original. Seriously, no one else has quite ever done material like "Captain for Dark Mornings" and "Gibsom Streets" before or since. The world lost someone unique when she departed this place.

Laura Nyro was so natural in what she did, she seems so suttle yet so powerful. I've quite never heard any song like "Captain for Dark Mornings", and in this live performance Laura gives it sensitive treatment. Same with "He's a Runner". "Map to the Treasure" gets Laura going to the homage of "Up on thhe Roof". She, to me, was beyond the Brill writers. Speaking a new New York lingo. New Generation-tinged. medatative. introspective, then jubilant. I will always love Laura for her dedications to JFK, RFK, and MLK in "Save The Country". What a New York Spirit I will always treasure, like fine wine, but I'm a rich man, 'cause I can have this tonic every day! I love you, Laura.
