Concert Summary

Kingfish had taken the place of the Grateful Dead as the premier jam band in the Bay Area after the Dead announced their touring retirement in 1974. The Dead, of course, was far from retired, but it did give singer/guitarist Bob Weir a chance to stretch out his musical chops with another band.

This show opens with the Elvis standard, "Mystery Train," which segues into "Mule Skinner Blues" and "Good-Bye Yer Honor." There are a number of other musical highlights, including the up-tempo "Juke," "Hypnotize," and the soulful, "All I Need Is Time." "Jump Back" and "New Minglewood Blues"…entire summary

Turns out new copies of the 2 disc set are still available. Bought it off ebay for less than $10. Does have a different mix, in the CD's liner notes they mention that much time and effort went into the King Biscut mixdowns. Sounds like they remixed the original multi-tracks when they released the CD, less echo on voices, guitars seem more upfront. I like both mixes, but would say I like the sound of the CD a little better. Problem with CD is the editing, it's a combination of the early and late shows. No "Hypnotize" on the cd's, which pissed me off a little. They should have made two seperate releases of the early and late shows. Well at least you can still hear the unedited shows here on the vault. Found out the show I mentioned before was from "My Father's Place" in Roslyn ?, NY. Seems like Relix Records released a CD's worth of tunes from the show. It's called "Night In New York" or "Live In New York", or somthing similar, I do believe it's out of print. I know King Biscut aired this show, sure would be great to see it here.

Really enjoyed this Bob Weir era show, Kingfish is definitely an underrated band. Saw them in 88 with the Wailers & a pre-fame Blues Traveler, they played many tunes from this performance. I also remember I used to have a King Biscut show of Kingfish right after Bob Weir leaves and is replaced by Michael O'Neill on guitar and vocals. I recorded it off the radio in the 80's, was from either from 77 or 78. It had songs off "Trident" which came out in 1978 on Jet Records. Love to see that show put on the Vault, you must have it somewhere.

I was always amazed how good Robbies tone was with that blonde tele going into the Musicmans.Best sounding Musicman I ever heard but it was probably Robbies playing.Loved hearing him play.

Per nitecat's question, I listened to the first song (Mystery Train>Muleskinner) from the cd and the Vault back to back. The cd, mixed by producer Gary Lyons (he produced Go To Heaven and many other lps) and Matt Kelly, has a much brighter sound and more sharply defined instruments. The cd is probably closer to how Kingfish wanted it to sound--the Vault is probably closer to how Kingfish actually sounded in many places in the Theater.
