Concert Summary

As a child living in the multicultural melting pot of New York City's Washington Heights, Kenny Rankin was exposed to a wide range of musical influences firsthand, from the popular sounds of American Top 40 hits and Jazz to the more culturally exotic fare of Brazilian and AfroCuban street musicians. As a teenager, Rankin began applying all these influences to his own music and began establishing himself as an insightful songwriter, a gifted acoustic guitarist and above all, an undeniably compelling world-class vocalist. With his supple, pristine tenor and an uncanny knack for phrasing,…entire summary

It is great to have two of KR's gems, "Up From the Skies" and "She's a Lady," from this show. . .saw him in Cincy just a few weeks before he passed away. A tremendous musician who was extremely friendly to my family and me after the show. . .and I am a nobody!!

"MINDUSTERS" Where It All started for me, "The Johnny Carson Show" '66, & Johnny himself so demonstrative & vocal-a-fan (I suppose he alone is responsible for Kenny breaking nationally) he graciously consented (I would like to believe "asked") to Write the liner notes on the above (Kenny's playing with the other Angels, now - he & Laura Nyro - referenced Album. His 1st. wife (& child) appear (she co-wrote/sings on the sides), & curiously the snapshots of Love & Fun which grace the cover Art, have him blowing smoke-rings - perhaps a premonishment? When I Sing & Play, though my style had long before/always been in his genre, I reflect on his uniqueness/command/Love... Goodbye, old friend, you will ever be with me/us in those highest, octave places, Peaceful, as Melinda continues to ask, "Mommy, mommy why?" "Come away, Melinda...It's just the way It used to BE...! H'H./H.e.m.

Great to hear this. I first saw him perform on the Flip Wilson Show in the '60s. I got to see him perform first at the University of Nevada, Reno (where I grew up) opening for George Carlin (who was hilarious by the way). Years later I opened a show for Kenny at the Great American Music Hall in San Francisco. Before the show I visited his dressing room armed with my LP copy of his "Like a Seed" for him to autograph. As a kid I sat with that record and learned a bunch of the songs. I told him that unbeknownst to him he taught me how to play the guitar. He was so gracious and appreciative. The show went great and he stood in the wings and watched my entire set, which did not include "Haven't We Met" which was a mainstay of my set and still is. He is just wonderful!

Great vocalist. Had the chance to see him twice. Brings back so many sweet memories. Thanks for posting this.
