Concert Summary

Of all the groundbreaking bands of the 1960s, few developed a repertoire more wide-ranging and eclectic than the Los Angeles-based group Kaleidoscope. Existing from 1966 to 1970, the group released four albums during those years, but the combination of non-existent label support, questionable management, and a repertoire that defied categorization all contributed to a lack of commercial success. Kaleidoscope's albums never reached a wide listening audience and with the exception of early underground radio listeners and attendees of the group's live performances, Kaleidoscope remained…entire summary

This is the first time I've heard these... I want to know more about this band !!! Thanks for the new "OLD " Jams!!!!!!

For those who love Kaleidescope, I've heard that David Lindley and Solomon Feldthouse are planning to get together soon, possibly to come out with an album of new material. Here's to hoping that they can see this through!

I'm thrilled to have anything of that era. Stu Brothman, of course, has gone on to become a key member of "Brave Old World" and "Veretski Pass", among other intense world bands. Amazing to hear him from 40 years ago. We were =all= a lot younger then.

I'll join in in voicing appreciation for a Kaleidescope show finally surfacing, and also wishing that it would have been a better demonstration of what magic they could do musically. For those wanting to know, Solomon is still involved in Balkan and Mediterranean music here in the Bay Area, and continues to inspire young people to check out traditional music. He's been embroiled in some heavy personal issues, and I always try to channel some positive vibes his way any time I hear Kaleidescope.

Great show, Yes its dated and at times adolescent but so what far more important as a historical document

After reading the comments left here, I have to make some of my own. I also saw the band numerous times, several times at the Avalon. True, this does not represent the band at it's best, but it's all we have now ... still, listen for the "hot" moments in these recordings and you'll briefly hear them at their best. It also does not represent the normal play list of the 67/68 period. It's a real shame Seven Ate Sweet is not here ... I heard a lot of pretty-poor-yet-popular bands back then, and recognized them for what they were, but these guys were powerful and exceedingly good when they wanted to be.

Although Wolfgang's Vault is to be lauded for making any live Kaleidoscope recordings available, this 'sample' hardly reflects the strength of the band. It's not unlike a freshly discovered live performance of Moby Grape from the "Truly Fine Citizen" era....nice to have, but not what we want. It is indeed unfortunate that so few 'live recordings' of Kaleidoscope seem to exist. Having sneeked into the music scene arena just ahead of the 'booklegging craze', there is a very good chance we fans of the band will have to piece together our forty year old memories of 'what once was' via their official recorded legacy. But anyone who saw Kaleidoscope at Denonshire Downs or The Avalon or on that flatbed truck after hours at the Monterey Pop Festival knows all too well what many famed musical comrades have proclaimed over the years......."This Is My Favorite Band Of All Time."

I've heard the whole thing now, and I've got to say--I love the music of this time and place and these guys are often spoken of highly, but this show SUCKS. Tedious, self-indulgent, not funny and just generally lame. They even screw up "Cuckoo'! Hats off to anarchitek for surviving this crap.

I like long psychedelic jams, too, but you'd have to be pretty wasted to get into that opener. What a yawner!
