Concert Summary

This is among the earliest known professional recordings of Journey, from long before it ascended to the top of the AOR radio charts with a long string of FM hits. The group had formed eight months earlier when young guitar superstar Neal Schon decided to form his own group after departing Santana in 1972. He eventually convinced singer/keyboardist Gregg Rolie to follow suit, making Journey the Bay Area's first handpicked supergroup. Also on board were bassist Ross Valory (best known for his role in the artsy psychedelic…entire summary

Saw this version of the band with Blue Oyster Cult at the SJ Civic Auditorium. Their first album has always been one of my favorites.

I agree, Please ad one from 75,76,77, before Steve Perry. There are many of us who loved them that way and would die to hear that great live music again. Myron S.

Was almost ready not to listen to this concert because of Bruce 958 comments on the mix it's only the first song that's bad and you have to remember this is off the board and the technology of the time and there are worst drummers to be out front Anysley Dunbar way above average drummer and early Journey (Saw them in 76 with this lineup) was special amix of santana and Mahavishnu rolled into one People can bitch all they want about the Chipmunck (Steve Perry) but they would have just disappeared into oblivion along with other jazz rock infusion Bands of the day plus the chicks digged the chipmunck and us guys s till got to see one of the great guitarist of all time and you usually got laid at the end of the night. Sounds like a Win Win Situation that I had happen at least 5 times Ah great memories. Long live the Chipmunck!!!!!!

I agree, Steve Perry ruined the band.

I saw journey on the Look Into The Future Tour in 1976 and stopped listening when Steve Perry joined the band

I can't believe how bad the mix is on this show. Neil is totally buried! Whoever mixed this is probably programming a drum machine and thinking he's real cool right about now. The first three Journey albums totally ruled!

I was a Journey fan long before Journey: was and still am a huge Santana fan, and Gregg Rolie and (later) Neal Schon's parts in that band were huge. So when they left, I 'followed' them, which led to Journey and all the other bands and solo stuff. But I didn't see Santana till 1986 and Journey till Oct2005! What a show. Since I was a hardcore fan before Steve Perry (what a voice, gotta give him credit!), I regretted and knew I would never see them perform any of that material. But, on this tour, they did, and the first song was the first one I heard by Journey and still one of their best: 'Of A Lifetime'! Jonathan Cain did a great job on vocals and keys. What a great surprise. Opening songs: Intro(synth voices, like ELP's 'Tarkus' intro); Of A Lifetime; I'm Gonna Leave You; and Mystery Mountain. Singer Steve Augeri provided rhythm guitar. Great concert, and Neal burned as usual. If you like Rolie/Schon/Santana, check out the CD "Abraxas Pool."

Lucky enough to catch this best of all Journey lineups at the Beacon in NYC as they opened for ELO at their best.

Too bad MTV couldn't have taken this concert & overdubbed it with Steve Perry face-mugging the camera.....
