Concert Summary

Following a nearly two-year leave of absence from recording and touring, a time devoted to rehabilitation from his well publicized addictions, Johnny Winter was poised to return to the musical world in 1973. Now healthier and stronger than he had been in many years, Winter entered the studio and with the help and encouragement of his longtime cohort, Rick Derringer, delivering the album Still Alive And Well, which served notice that he had indeed survived. While still rooted in the blues, this album was a stripped down rock 'n' roll affair, filled with cautionary tales of survival. …entire summary

I too was at this concert. I've been to countless rock shows and this perhaps sits on top. After a night of kick ass guitar the house light went on and Greensleeves played indicating that everyone should leave now. No way did I want to leave and either did anyone else in the packed house. I was on the floor being moshed about but there was no way I was going to leave if everyone else felt this way. I remember the road crew stripping the mics from their stands yet the crowd didn't budge, rather it seemed to grow louder. After about 30 minutes of raucous applause and hooting and hollering, the crew started to put the mics back into their stands and the crowd got even louder. When Johnny Winter came back out to play a few more songs I think the crowd loved him and he us. I've never been to a show like that since and I suppose I won't again. That was a night!

What I will never forget about this show....... JW finished his set after 3 encores. He left the building and headed back to his hotel. We would not leave. They finally brought the lights up, starting tearing down the stage and demanded we leave. We would not leave. The crowd would stomp and scream until they could no more. Then it would start all over again. After about 30 minutes suddenly the lights went out. 15 minutes later JW was on stage playing another 3 encores. I went to over 100 shows in SF around this time period and had thought I had seen it all. I never have seen anything like that. When A Bill Graham show plays Greensleeves the show is over period end of story. They played that song over and over again and made it real loud to emphasize the point. If you left this show early I'm sorry you missed it. And to the few fools like a couple of my friends who came just to see Ted Nugent and left afterwards.......you will never know what you missed. God I miss Winterland ! Bill Graham may you rest in peace.

Great show. i5guitars is right. Johnny kicked Nugent's ass. Johnny may not jump around and spin like he used to back in the day, but he's Still Alive and Well!!!!

i too was at the Winterland show....Johnny kicked puny ted nugents pathetic guitar playing act and even worse bowmanship all the way back to the wastelands of detroit where he belongs! it was such a pleasure to witness his total enthusiasm of playing blues and rock with such unbridled passion and authority unlike anyone else i've ever had the pleasure of seeing play live.....and i've seen a ton of 'em.....God bless Johnny Winter in all his days to come, however many there may be. i know of all his many troubles over the last 10 years...have seen him play 3 times during that time span at the Fillmore and it brought tears to my eyes. So hard to see and hear that ghost of his own former heroic and legendary self. i just read where he will be headlining the SF Blues Festival this year. i know that he's made some significant strides since i last saw him...and cant wait to see him again. i know it will never be the same as his glory days, but hell...its Johnny Winter playing live! in 2008....HALLEFUCKINGLOOYAH!!!!!!!!!!
