Concert Summary

Blues-rock guitarist Johnny Winter was coming off five solid years of hit albums and sold out tours when he did this show in San Diego for the King Biscuit Flower Hour radio concert series. Winter was promoting Saints & Sinners, and still carving his own legacy in rock when, at around the same time of this recording, his younger brother and former band member Edgar, hit platinum with the LP They Only Come Out At Night, and his own band, the…entire summary

Peter - the San Diego and Fresno shows had their dates/venues swapped...the longer show was actually recorded in San Diego the night prior to this one and you can find it listed in the related concerts box above. DJ - that BOA show is correctly listed; it was transferred from a Bill Graham tape recorded at Winterland. We do have the tapes for the BOA set from this Fresno show and will be trying to get that on the site as soon as we can. thanks for listening and for all your help!

Hey Guys, Thanks for correctly relabeling the Johnny Winter concerts, by switching the Fresno date with the San Diego date, as I suggested. Now you can complete the corrections by relabeling the Black Oak Arkansas, San Francisco, 3/30/74, as Fresno-Selland Arena, 3/31/74. As I stated before, I attended the Fresno show, which featured Johnny Winter, Black Oak Arkansas & Brownsville Station. I am also the guy that got you to change the venue listing for Brownsville Station from the Holiday Inn, to it's correct location, the Selland Arena. I'm absolutely sure of these facts because a Fresno Disc-Jockey came onstage before the show started & told us all that we could hear the show two weeks later on their local FM station, recorded by the King Biscuit Flower Hour. Of course, I recorded it on my old Teac reel-to-reel tape recorder when it was broadcast-ed & that's how I know that the Black Oak Arkansas you have labeled San Francisco, 3/30/74, is actually the Fresno-Selland Arena show, 3/31/74. Thanks for making all of my suggested corrections...WV Rules!

if you want to know more about doug you need to go to volcanic horizon on myspace. I have known him since the late 70's, so I can assure you you will not be disappointed.

Whenever Winter played at the Fillmore West, I was there. I probably saw him in the 1970s four different times there. He was always tremendous and literally "burned the place down". His mastery of the guitar was unparalleled among the many artists I was so fortunate to see at Fillmore before it closed. His performances were always intense and exhausting as he lit the place up with his fiery licks. I still recall when he literally pranced on the the stage in a black tuxedo wearing a black top hat with his white hair down to his shoulders. He was a flash, and a spectacle not to be believed. What a showman!

I saw this tour when it stopped at the Cape Cod Collisum in Barnstable. It was an old hockey area with the worst acoustics ever. I sat right down front and could not hear a single vocal during the entire performance. Then, to top it off, our driver got arrested leaving the venue for having an open beer. Still, JW is and was awesome!

Even though Johnny is not what he was 20 odd years ago -he still is great and is worth seeing live. We have lost Jimi and Rory, at least we still have Johnny from that era.

Listening to this reminds me of how good this cat used to be and how far he's fallen. He's now a barely competent player but 35 years ago - wow - no one could touch him...
