Concert Summary

Before he joined up with the remaining surviving members of Lynyrd Skynyrd in 1990 to revive that classic rock franchise (and as the replacement for his late brother, Ronnie), Johnny Van Zant had a budding Southern Rock solo career, with Van Zant, his own band. He was just beginning when the Skynyrd plane crashed in 1977, but the notoriety he received from being Ronnie's youngest brother kept the momentum going on his own solo career for a few years after that.

This show, recorded in 1982 for the King Biscuit Flower Hour…entire summary

I think it would be so cool if Johnny would get the old band back and finish his Brick Yard Road Tour.

I saw JVZ at the Country Club a few years earlier than this in support of his first album. The place was packed and we had to watch the show from the upper balcony. Since we were underage we had to drink a few beers in the parking lot before we entered. The last song the band played was an instrumental version of FREE BIRD dedicated to hislate brother Ronnie. Johnny walked off the stage and a single spotlight shone over the microphone while the band continued to play FREE BIRD. Those were some great shows at the Country Club in the Valley- Gary Moore, MSG, The Babys, U2,Joe Perry Project, Guns & Roses etcc

I've been a follower of JVZ's since "The Bayou" days in Georgetown,DC Standing in the Darkness is as much an anthem for him, as some of the GREAT Skynyrd songs. The Van Zant's were a great combination of writers. To take nothing away from the rest of the band-s, paving the way for generations, it's just my southern-man, Virginia bred LOVE of Faith-Family-Southern R&R that believes they are the frontrunners....eddewveall54 from Jax-westside, for twenty-seven years strong....1/2/2010

This is what rock is all about. Loved Jonnys' stuff from the moment I layed ears on it all those years ago. Classic heavy southern rock played by real musicians.Filthy guitar and thumping head nodding ryth. section.Great to hear it live. Still stirs my tummy to this day. Saddens me that I will never witness it live myself.

great to finally hear his solo band live at last,i use to buy his albums on import here unlike 38 special that got released here and even played dates johnny was always the odd one out it seemed, probably because he really didn't go the way you expected him to go,yes he had the southern rock voice but he was doing something totally different to his other brothers, great voice, great band and a great concert.this is what about this site is to finally hear these kind of bands that you had bought on vynil but never got the chance to see live in the flesh, thanx
