Concert Summary

Originally, Sebastian was booked to open a three night run for Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young. Tragically, on September 30th, a few days prior to the beginning of this run, David Crosby's girlfriend, Christine Hinton was killed in a car accident. Crosby was understandably distraught and unable to perform, so at the last minute, the shows were postponed for mid-November. With the exception of Thursday night October 2, three replacement…entire summary

That weird little instrument is the auto harp. It's a real instrument, and when John eventually found a band he started playing it again (along with Summer in the City). The new guitar is probably a custom acoustic with a pickup, built to have a bass string or two. Al Anderson borrowed it for a few years after he opened for John in the back of an Italian restaurant in Vernon, CT, in the late 70s or early 80s. John's shows on the rotating stage under the Oakdale tent in the summers of 70 and 71 are still among my favorite concerts. A cord shorted out during the 70 show, so his wife sat on the stage, holding the plug in just the right position. Cheapo-Cheapo Productions, indeed!

I've always admired his songwriting. The Room Nobody Lives In is a perfect synthesis of lyrics/music/tone timbre.

This is a great show. Very intimate. Sebastian is a great songwriter and a warm, personable performer, and when he gets into an emotional song he really puts a lot of feeling into it. The show description says he plays acoustic guitar but it sounds like he also plays an electric throughout the show. He talks about his "new guitar" numerous times, too. During "The Room Nobody Lives In" it sounds like he plays a harmonium or organ or something. I wonder if he ever plays that weird little stringed instrument that he plays in the "Do You Beleive in Magic" video when he's sitting in a VW bug and the whole band is sitting on cars and stuff. Does anybody know what instrument that is and whether he actually played it in concert, or was it just a prop for the video?

One of the best performers I've had the pleasure to see. I was annoyed at the level of applause he got when he walked on stage. I figured he needed to earn that applause. Well, he did....and then some.

What a congenial/warm/comforting presence. Sure, sometimes he's a little hokey, precious ('She's a Lady') and panders to your inner narcotic fiend but who couldn't beam a smile upon listening to the indulgent lazyness of "Daydreaming" Fine.
