Concert Summary

Following his service in the army, John Prine seemed to spring forth as a fully formed multi-dimensional singer songwriter at the age of 24. In 1971, Prine released one of the most impressive debut albums ever, proving himself capable of writing folk balladry, country, and rock songs laced with pathos, sensitivity, and sardonic humor that reflected on the human condition. A critical smash but a commercial disappointment, this remarkable album set the tone for the rest of his career. The next two albums, 1971's Diamondsentire summary

I saw John Prine last winter in Birmingham, AL at the Alabama Theater. I have to say, despite his age and the throat cancer and all that, the guy can still deliver in concert. He seems to still enjoy performing and doesn't mind singing the oldies as well as his new stuff.

I saw John about this same time, in a chapel on the campus of Denison University, in Granville, Ohio. It was the only place for concerts then, in the early 70s. He walked on stage, put a six pack on his stool, popped a beer, said that playing in churches made him nervous. As we would say today, he had us at hello. 10 or more concerts later, he still has me. Thanks for this great concert, and great website. It allows for a great journey back.

The man can make you laugh, cry and dance the boogaloo (or the hootchie-koo, as JP might say, all in the same song. A rare and treasured voice for all the ages, and for all ages.

My friends and I reminisce about the Lenox days back in the 70s. We've been trying to come up with a list of the people we saw there like Bonnie, Prine, Bromberg, Goodman, Walker, Redbone etc, etc., but it gets a little fuzzy. Today I thought "Google it!", and 10 minutes later I was calling a friend and telling him that I was listening to the Bonnie Raitt concert we were at there in '73. Thank you!

Lovely! Prine's the real deal, and it'd be great to have more concerts by him. BTW, I don't think Donald & Lydia concerns "a couple separated by army life" -- I think they're separated by notions of idealized romance, and not just from each other but from /any/ romantic partner. It's not clear whether the two of them have ever even heard of the other.
