I was also at this concert at the polo field at golden Gate park in San Francisco. Bill Had only been killed in that hellicopter crash less than a week and Bill's son David put this concert together and David told me that it wasn't all that hard to organize when a bunch of the bands called and asked to play. Almost 500,000 people turned out for this one day gig that was FREE!

I was there, and also Neil Young came out and played a few tunes with the Dead, like "Forever Young," and Neil didn't let Jerry do any solos. And the harp player sat in for a few tunes.

It's kind of strange - I have a cassette tape of this show, and Fogerty's guitar is quite a bit louder, and the drums, bass and keyboards are a bit quieter than here. I'd say Fogerty's guitar is at least twice as loud as here - not quite as loud as I'd like it to be (it doesn't dominate, but it's not drowned out by the drums and keyboards) Even though it's not a high-quality tape, it sounds better than this.

So there's a screw-up somewhere, and it's not that the Dead's crew silenced Fogerty's guitar. It's either in the recording they used or in the production and compression for this website.

That being said, this is not a great combination - the Dead could rock in their own way (more in the early years), but not here (rehearsals might have helped). Good idea, not great results.
