Poster Art Q & A

Description

Jimi Hendrix and the Flying Eyeball are images indelibly linked in the psychedelic poster art of the late Rick Griffin. Griffin discovered The Eyeball, in a much more benign form, in the 1950s auto detailing art of California pinstriper Von Dutch and reworked it over time to become the winged, bloodshot figure parting a ring of fire with serpent-like tentacles. The highlighted lettering, vivid color, and complicated imagery reflect Griffin's attention to precise details and the influence of Indian lore and archeology on his work. The Eyeball became associated exclusively with Hendrix's music in future billings and recordings of his performances.

A hand printed silk screen was produced in the late 1980's and measures 28" x 41". All editions were signed by the artist and numbered in pencil.

Serigraphs are extremely high quality reproductions of some of the most significant posters in our collection. To produce a serigraph, layer after layer of ink is applied to the paper, one color at a time, until the piece is finished. The finished print is more brilliant in color and requires a much higher degree of work by the artist and the printer than do offset reproductions. The result is artwork of exceptional quality.
