Concert Summary

This run of Jimi Hendrix concerts at Winterland, with Dino Valenti and then Buddy Miles Express opening, produced some of the most interesting Hendrix sets ever recorded. In mid 1968, as Hendrix had just released his monumental Electric Ladyland album, he began actively pursuing opportunities to jam with other musicians. He became more open to his improvisational abilities than at any other time in his all too…entire summary

Jania - There's nothing that would give me more joy than to SPANK your ass for describing this set in the manner in which you do. This is a very good set, minus the equipment problems. This is one of the best and inspired versions of Like a Rolling Stone Jimi ever did (next to some of the great versions captured on audience recordings). Fire is solid, so is Lover Man and Foxy Lady. Tax Free is a very inspired loose jam. All in all, this is a very good performance by the maestro! Shame on you!

Yes this is the correct 'Like a Rollin' Stone' from this gig and Jimi did play 6 concerts altogether so there is one more to come which is rather a good one actually. I've had all 6 gigs in perfect soundboard quality for 25 years now. I got them directly from the Hendrix Estate at that time as I let them film my Hendrix Convention here in the UK on September 15th, 1984. If you go onto Youtube and type in: Jimi Hendrix Convention' you will see the time I brought Jimi's dad and stepmother out onto the stage. The place erupted - please feel free to leave a comment when you see it. Take care, John Berry.

Bring back the right version of Like A Rolling Stone please. It's another song right now. Also, wasn't there another concert (#6) that Jimi played at Winterland? Didn't he play Little Wing in that show.

Not a great set -- there are better in this run. It features a loose but inspired "Like a Rolling Stone" and a strong version of "Foxy Lady," but technical difficulties with Jimi's amp intrude in the latter. After equipment repair, "Tax Free" is a long jam of a song which never worked for me, followed by more tuning. "Hey Joe" is only average. The rhythm section seems a bit off at the start of "Purple Haze" and Jimi isn't in top form on vocals or guitar. "Wild Thing" is the finisher.
