Concert Summary

Jess Roden is one of those rock 'n' roll enigmas. In his native U.K., he was a critic's darling that was said to have a blue-eyed soul voice matched only by the likes of Paul Rodgers and Steve Winwood. This recording, done as part of a BBC radio concert series, was recorded on an unknown date in 1974, shortly after the release of Roden's first solo LP, issued by Island Records.

With only five songs, it is painfully too short, but long enough to show the enormous talent Roden has always had as a soulful singer, songwriter, musician, and front man. Opening with "Sad Story," Roden and…entire summary

I saw Jess Roden supporting Roxy Music at Birmingham back in 1974 and became a big fan. Check out this site, which has helped to bring out a soon-to-be-released retrospective of Jess's work:- http://musiquarium.wordpress.com/2007/02/18/unsung-heroes-no1-jess-roden/ He has a great voice! I once won a competition on the BBC by identifying a Jess Roden track thinkit was Leave Your Hat On from the album of the same name and later covered by Tom Jones

I liked this concert allright, not exactly full of the hooks that makes commercial success but music is not always about hooks, it's about what comes out when you play..I'm like jim in previous comments--I am also a professional musician, albeit unknown as well and financially living. It (music) has provided me with that extra hundred when I needed it, and didn't provide it at times when I did. I'm sure that Jess Roden has seen the same bar floors and he has gone home smelling like smoke many times when he went home that can't be removed from your clothes unless washed. Regardless, I think he, Jess Roden, sounds like the band "Chase" without the virtuoso trumpet part played by Chase. It's good musical stuff to listen to, actually funky and "hott" but not full of the hooks you need to bring home that ever-elusive perpetual paycheck. SB

First you give us Paul Butterfield's Better Days supergroup live and now Jess Roden from my own local patch (black country, uk) I thought I was the only one who remembered/still played this stuff! I think there must have been more than one Jess Roden Band concert on the BBC as I've got a tape of him doing great versions of Jump Baby, Desperadoes and (Al Green's) Can't Get Next to You. Great Stuff, much appreciated.

really smokin' stuff. it just goes to prove that being really good doesn't get you on the list. i have spent my life playing music and recieved many compliments. compliments or not, i'm still unknown and very much hurting financially. when i hear stuff like this at least i know i'm not alone in the world of unknowns. it's all about being in the right place at the right time. where is that place anyway? i can't find it. anyway, this band is really awesome. how is it they were passed over? what a crazy world. peace, jim

It was the ALAN BOWN SET, not Andy Bown. Also of some interest was Jess's bandmate and sax player with the Alan Bown Set, John Anthony Helliwell, who went on to fame and fortune with Supertramp.
