Interview Summary

Recorded while the Grateful Dead were on a break from touring, the content that acts as a focus for this interview were the movies Jerry Garcia was involved with at the time - The Grateful Dead Movie and Hells Angels Forever. However, this works out nicely as Jerry and Mary Travers (of Peter Paul & Mary fame) are free to follow up on tangential conversations. For those who are not familiar with Mary's interview style, you should be warned that it is often difficult to determine who is interviewing whom. Regardless, this is the least grating of her interviews on the site as…entire summary

    Uncle Bobo, I meant to say that I agree with you as far as Jerry's articulateness goes, but on the Steve Miller thing I must diverge, as I don't think Deadheads have ever abided by Miller's unkind and seeming attempt to pump up his own cred while essentially denigrating Jerry.

    Uncle Bobo: I agree with you, and this recording, in my opinion, is a good enough indicator of Jerry's nimble mind and articulateness (though he was polite enough not to object to Mary Travers and her ego repeatedly stepping all over the words of her interview subject), but there are other interviews that are better Jerry did over the course of his life. Check out others here or at archive.org and elsewhere on the Internets. Also, since losing my original cassette version ages ago, I am eternally on the lookout for Jerry's interview circa 1979 on the Studs Terkel radio show on Chicago's WFMT-FM, in which former Rolling Stone writer and now Northwestern University journalism professor Abe Peck sits in for an hour or so discussion. If anyone has a bead on this, please let me know at by dropping me a line at my yahoo address under the moniker band_beyond_description (making sure to put underscores between the words)

    "Uncle Bobo"? Who are you to usurp the nick-name of Bill Graham? Are you a psychologist to diagnose Jerrys "decline". Does Steve Miller know you quoted him, and where is the verification of said quote? Yes Jerry was intelligent and articulate. I miss him on all those levels, and of course, the music. His decline was obvious to all on the final tour, and yes, painful to the nth degree, but love knows no bounds or disabilities for me, so I cherish each moment shared. This interview is, in my opinion, a fine example of Jerry in his prime. Peace, Love, and Music!

    Steve Miller once said that Jerry was a lot better at talking to people than playing the guitar in the Haight. One can argue the merits of his guitar playing (I'm a big fan), but here we can hear just how articulate and intelligent he was. The Dead would not have succeeded without his supple mind and confident leadership vision. Seeing him talk or hearing interviews with him late in his life, it's heartbreaking to see his decline.

    I love interviews by jerry I miss his voice,his humor,he was very intelligently animated,very picturesque in how he projected what he heard and felt about things music, art,and yes drugs at times alot of ethusiasm when it came to speak of the unspoken thing like how syncronicity played in the music of his bands Grateful dead and how you and jerry would get that hidden joke and everyone was on the same page would cheer at once,I guess you had to be there,it was deep and not to many events in american history could hold a candle to the Grateful Dead experience it transended everything,those guys were tapped into something magical Deadhead Larry Santa Rosa,California :}
