Concert Summary

Bill Graham, in collaboration with the Hog Farm, presented this memorable concert at French's Camp, a beautiful outdoor location situated on the Eel River, well known for its annual reggae festival. This recording captures the debut performance of Garcia's acoustic band (which would go on to play a very successful extended run on Broadway later in the year). Few Jerry Garcia Band recordings from this era circulate from soundboard direct sources and even fewer still were recorded with such clarity and balance between the instruments.

Garcia's first set of the day began with the debut…entire summary

I was at this show and it was magical. It was hot and the river was so refreshing between sets. What followed this was two electric sets that I still consider the best live performance I ever experienced. Going to the Greek the following day gave me an immediate reference to just how different and I actually got to see Ripple acoustically on the Eel.

I dig Jerry whenever he took a notion to pick a little bluegrass, folk, or just sitting in with Grisman, Old & In The Way. This is a treasure, to be sure. RMcDinGa 4-11-10

Torbert and I were Alaskans. So...
I'm at Alembic studios watching Kingfish record, and Jerry shows up.
already knows I'm Dav's harp player friend from AK, and opens a MATCHBOX! then tells me how he spliced mint and MJ: "would you like to try the first batch"? anyway, this music takes me back to that moment. He was the friendlyest guy I ever met. ...and I don't remember the rest of the day.
