Concert Summary

It is somewhat strange to hear this version of Jefferson Starship ripping though a killer version of "Winds of Change" during this hit-packed performance recorded at Pacific Amphitheatre in Costa Mesa, CA on 6/27/84. The winds of change were certainly blowing at its front door that particular night.

It was during the band's initial 1984 tour promoting Nuclear Furniture, its new LP at the time. The night prior to this show, founder and band leader Paul Kantner called a meeting in the dressing room to inform the band he was leaving. Kantner morphed his previous band, Jefferson…entire summary

The summary is incorrect about this being the final night; the band continued playing this tour well into September without Paul.

Like some of the other Jefferson Airplane/Starship shows on here, they are great, but would be even greater if Slick's microphone was silenced when she tried "banter" between songs.time.

It still amazes me that inane comments about bands "selling out". When bands reach mass appeal and start selling records on a massive scale, someone always accuses them of "selling out", even if the sound is basically the same. Starship was one of those who were attacked for selling out when they became massively famous in the late 70's, early 80's. When band members leave, and the dynamic changes, what are they supposed to do, just quit? This is how they make their living. You go to your job everyday for a paycheck, are you a sellout too?

The sound quality is great. I have all their stuff on vinyl, but I only got into them 1967-1978. This is talented, very 80's. As Grace said, sober, smiling, and selling out. Hey, Brett Ford I live in Cape Coral, and Im a huge Airplane fan!

"Save Your Love" need there to be anything else to say about this lineup/album/group?? Craig Chaquico just absolutely, rips, tears and shreds this song; like NO other guitarist ever could or would want to, after hearing his studio version........? Period!!! The fact this one of the rarist of songs, unfortunately, on any and all compilations of the this band is a mystery........to this day!!! Chaquico, another of a short list of incredibly talented and gifted guitarist to ever play this instrument. Period!!! Far overshadowed by the drama of the drama Queen and King EVER in rock and roll........Ms. Slick and Mr. Kanter!!!

Anonymous comment dated Wednesday, December 10, 2008 is 100% correct! I was at this concert and I remember hearing the news that Paul Kantner had left the night before. I believe they were performing at Universal Studios the night he left. I am a long time fan and I remember being disappointed that Paul was not at this concert. It was a great show but I missed Paul. Listen closely to the concert. There are no PK vocals.

I, too noticed the inclusion of MB in the photo though he was long gone from the mix during this era. I recall living in Laguna Hills, CA and hearing how oustoundingly loud the band was, playing at the Irvine Meadows Amphitheatre. MT uses similar vocals to many other "voices of rock" during this period, but few could match the way he blended the upper and lower registers and really belted out those notes! (A superior sound system really helped, too!) "Mickey Mouse," indeed - but a mighty one! He only did what GS should have done if he didn't join the band - dominate as Steve Perry did for Journey, Coverdale/Hughes did for Deep Purple, Robert Plant did for Zeppelin and Ozzie did for Sabbath!
