Concert Summary

At the dawn of the MTV Age, Jefferson Starship was still plugging away, but they were clearly running out of creative steam. Grace Slick had returned to the band, but during her absence the group had recruited former Elvin Bishop Group vocalist, Mickey Thomas, and Journey's drummer, Ansley Dunbar, into the band. The combination of Thomas' falsetto and Dunbar's drumming, along…entire summary

A few months after this show they played a similar set at the Greek Theatre. IMHO, they were at their peak in terms of performing live. This was the time to see the JS. What a line up! David, Ansley, Grace, Pete, Craig, Mickey, and Paul. The stage was busy; regardless, they were having fun, the sound was clean, it was a performance I will never forget. Pete Sears did one of the best bass solo's I have ever seen live. Anlsey’s drumming was perfect. Mickey and Grace’s vocals complimented each other. They were on this night, you had to be there. An unknown band opened the show, and we began to boo them off stage. But, the last couple of songs they started to click. It was Huey Lewis and the News.

PS - I see that Black Widow doesn't appear on this setlist. But I swear they played it at the show. Unless I hallucinated that too...? :)

Boy oh boy, this brings me back memories. My buddy Eric and I were there and it was great concert, what with the Dead opening for JS and appearances by Boz Scaggs and Country Joe as well. Chaquico's solo on Black Widow kicks! I've never seen a bad show by the Starship and I've seen quite a few. By the way, does anyone out there remember a free concert put on by JS in 1979 at Vaillancourt Fountain in The City? Did I hallucinate it? :)

One of the best I've ever heard the Starship do, just blazing hot right from the introduction. UNBELIEVABLE!!! Pete Sears, amazing bass solo! Great songs abound, check it out NOW!!!

Save Your Love" is a classic!!! Craig Chaquico is just outstanding!! Period!!! The mix on that song here, like the '84 concert here on the site, is __________? Hey, but the fact Wolfgang has THESE to begin with, is such a treasure and treat, I can't nor won't complain. Thank you Wolfgang.....and now, I do know who the "F" you are now? My sincere thanks to your whole company and your spirit to keep this music alive and relative!!!! We are blessed

Wow, I have a JA/JS fan since 1967 .. Yeah Micky Disco Thomas can't be blamed for all the Jefferson Family names problems. I swear they never did Light the Sky on Fire Live as well as they did on record, but this is the closest to a real kick ass version as I have ever heard. Stairway to Cleveland left something to be desired ( this was my fave JS song for a long long time I wish Modern Times was available again) Pete Sears bass solo is in a word FUN. He is one of the most under rated musicians out there. Ride the tigar sounds better here than I had heard in years too. Over all a fun little concert. Now we need a killer JS concert with Marty maybe 76-78 version of JS :) A little Papa John is a good thing !
