Poster Art Q & A

Description

"From an audience standpoint, at the time the Airplane was more accessible. It was easier to identify with the people in the Airplane than the Grateful Dead or Janis, because Janis was so powerful and so different, all the emotions right out there. The Grateful Dead looked like they were almost dead. They were only just twenty years old, you know. But they were a bizarre -looking group of people. The people in the Airplane were like two-years-of-college, white boys singing folk music. They were just more accessible on a pop-y kind of level." Grace Slick, Bill Graham Presents: My Life Inside Rock and Out

"When Grace joined them, [Jefferson Airplane] it changed. Grace was already one of the big superstars of the Bay Area, even with the Great Society. It was obvious she was hot. Because she really had great presence. On stage, she had that scary magnetism, that power. You could tell she was happening." Jerry Garcia, Bill Graham Presents: My Life Inside Rock and Out

Much like theatrical playbills, programs have been used at concerts since the 1900s. With information on bands and their members, it gives the concertgoer a chance to get to know the musicians they have paid money to see. The Vault's exceptional collection of programs range over four decades from venues around the world.
