Concert Summary

On this Saturday night, the second night of the run, the Jefferson Airplane performs between Sons of Champlin and the Grateful Dead.

The show begins with Grace Slick chatting a bit before launching the band into "Somebody To Love" to kick things off. Everything on this memorable night is performed with passionate intensity, but several things stand out during the first hour. They perform a lovely version of…entire summary

It's really great to hear"Blows against the Empire" material-still one of my fave records... But Grace turns it into a Jam about her and a flying fish! Though I can only speculate about the mix, you will notice that its in two groups :guitars and vox on left, drums and bass on right(mostly, the bass is centered a bit more) , so someone could have used a two track tape withh the idea of going back afterwards and mixing them with the panning a little more centered but the ability to( in theory) add stuff like reverb or delay on vox and guitar that wouldn't neccesarily work on bass and drums-just a theory...U could make a mix of this: just record it as is, then put it thru a mixer and eq/pan closer to center.

bmujazz; That's Marty doing the la la on Martha. I agree it ruins the piece. Shame. Aside from the mix, this is a worthy example of Airplane at that time. Saw them in May of that yr. at Winterwonderland and it was equally as good.

Who is doing the ridiculous 'la-la-las' on Martha? It does not sound like Paul, Grace or Marty.
Could it be some audience member came on stage to join in? Ruins this tune for me, one of my favorites by the Airplane (notwithstanding the fact that the girl in question is, like, 13).

I was wondering if it was really Dryden on this one, because theroretically 'Mau Mau' is co-written by Joey Covington. But it definitely sounds like Dryden. The 'Mau Mau' co-written by Covington on the studio album is very different. 'Pooneil' is fantastic.

Great playing, really weird mix. Too much separation.

By JA standards, this is mediocre. Flat vocals by Grace & Marty, Jack is apparently really stoned, Eskimo cuts in & out, & Other Side end early & abruptly.

On the side, the sound's pretty good, & there's something about hearing Grace sing about having sex with a Fish..........

Great set, but I personally don't like the mix at all. Sounds like those shocking stereo mixes of the early Beatles albums (apparently done by George Martin's underlings after he'd already left the studio - George only did mono) with the bass and drums on one speaker and all the vocals and guitar on the other with nothing in the middle. So I just changed my amp to mono and it sounded terrific - really full rich sound.

in their prime jack spencer and jorma are truly volatile / the cascadind vocals intertwined a performance like this shows their great prowess and versatility and why they are one of america's greatest and most infleuential bands
