Concert Summary

This three day run, featuring Jefferson Airplane opening a bill which featured the Paul Butterfield Blues Band and legendary bluesman Muddy Waters, would be the second time Bill Graham presented concerts at Winterland. The exact same lineup had been presented at this larger venue the previous weekend. The performances were so well received and attended, that Graham decided to repeat his success with three additional shows on this weekend.

This late show set from the Saturday night shows begins in similar fashion to the early show with another short jam that segues directly into an…entire summary

Very bluesy set. (I prefer their folky/poppy/artsy stuff.) Better sound than the earlier set that day.

The times were magical, and Airplane helped make them so. I was fortunate to have grown up during this era, which to this day continues to influence my guitar playing. Jack's bass was rolling melodic thunder (for Jack/Jorma synergy, check out the first Hot Tuna album, 1970, acoustic). Early Airplane harmonies were sweet, the music textured...I can almost smell the incense.

"The music was raw and unpolished but Balin's voice was still moving. It's hard to believe that the memories are 42 years old and still so strong and vivid today! Just goes to show us how powerful and central this era of music was and still is to our lives then and now. amadeus" I agree with the assertion that its unpolished but Balin's voice soars and its moving, my thoughts exactly. That whole paragraph above was a great post. I was born in the 70's, so it's central to me now, but gosh I wish I'd been born in 40's so that it could have been central to my life "then" (in the 60's). Eternal envy. Could've seen Airplane live. However, It bounds across time, this music. I feel like i'm reaching into a dream cloud.

I was never a huge Airplane fan (largely because I really found Starship pretty useless) but these early concerts have been a revelation. The San Francisco scene so set the stage for the explosion of innovation in rock music that happened over the next five years. And the sound is damn good (except for a little distortion in the vocals) for concerts recorded more than 40 years ago. Still don’t have much patience for the overindulgent Starship, though.
