Concert Summary

This three-day run, featuring Jefferson Airplane opening and closing a bill which featured the Paul Butterfield Blues Band and legendary bluesman Muddy Waters, would be the second time Bill Graham presented concerts at Winterland. The exact same lineup had been presented at this larger venue the previous weekend. The performances were so well received and attended, that Graham decided to repeat his success with three additional shows on this weekend.

This second show of the run starts off in similar fashion to the previous night with another short jam that segues directly into an…entire summary

One of the disappointments of all the Monterey Pop '67 releases has been the omission of the Airplane's smokin' version of High Flyin' Bird. This concert comes the closest to that of the Airplane concerts released here. The sound is a lot better on this concert that some of the others, too.

I usually dont go for vocal heavy songs...but Jack's bass gives it the soul to allow the Airplane to SOAR HIGH!

Hey Now! These Guys really got some crazy sounds in the days before electronics, sequencers, pedals, and "special effects" were even available, much less popular. While Jorma doesn't have the soulfulest vibrato, his ear is divine--and he added much to American musical stew.... Even Hot Tuna does more than just nostalgically play the great foundations...they bring a special ear of arranging and improv that makes their playing truly important.

this is the beginning of the emergence of folk rock. these fortunate folk artists were given/purchased electric guitars and amplifiers and then had their there way with them. this is the beginning, i know, i was there.

Hearing Muddy Waters and JA together for the first time together -- priceless!

hope not only the early fans are listening...discovering JA led me to a lifetime love of their songs; an interesting group of songwriters and musicians that should be studied well into the future
