Concert Summary

This is Jefferson Airplane's New Year's Eve show, with Quicksilver and Big Brother and the Holding Company opening. This recording is incomplete and starts in progress. Quite likely this is the last 45 minutes of their set.

Unfortunately, the entire set was not recorded, but what is here is quite interesting. Due to the New Year's Eve circumstances (and probably mind altering substances), this is inferior quality to those opening sets.…entire summary

Jam #2 would have been a sweet bonus track for the Baxter's CD!

Journalists found it easy to attempt to marginalize Janis Joplin by citing her "screaming" in what falls often in a condescending manner. For many, myself included Janis' "screaming" was much more than that one dimensional cop out. Janis and Grace, wrote the blueprint for white women in an unparalleled way; by often "howling" I like that description and using tremendous vibrato and passion to the ceremonial state of the Shamanista. I am just reflecting on the narrative of the above show which by the way rocks indeed, so not here to preach just give a contrary view of the import of Janis range of possibility. Clearly, Janis and Grace I imagine were both first borns for woman to join and challenge the boys club in a way that made the music community re-evalute what "feminine" singing was and "masculine" roles as well. Clearly they both transcended the eras concept of gender safety. How cool to even have Janis and Grace on stage improving; for me this is priceless in itself. If only video would be brought forward.... wow! :D

This set is perhaps one of the best recordings of the airplane and associated bands. I think "Other Side" is performed in sheer ferocity and energy here and I just love it. As far as the last jam, it is definitely Grace Slick and Janis Joplin howling away behind the guy from Quicksilver singing. I can hear them both; Wolfgangsvault has a picture of the two of them singing at this particular concert.

I don't think that is Janis screaming in the background on the 3rd jam. Anyone have anymore details about the jam session at the end?
