Concert Summary

This is the second set of a marathon show, with Jefferson Airplane sharing the bill with Quicksilver and the Grateful Dead.

Here we have the Jefferson Airplane in full flight as the '60s are fading into the '70s. Those turbulent times were reflected strikingly not only in the Airplane's music, but also within the personal makeup of the group itself; this distinctive version of the band had already begun to splinter.

I'd suggest those interested in this Airplane period check out the 9/14/70 show which is far superior to this.

The sound person never gets the band dialed in, this is especially irritating on the first few songs where instruments & volume levels fade in & out. The guitars are out of tine, & lots of flat vocals.

Not one of their better shows.

Saw the Airplane twice. First in July of 69 just three days prior to Woodstock. Show opened with BB King and The Who and was a Filmore East Production with the Joshua Light Show at Tanglewood in Lenox MA. Bill Gram did the intros. I recall this guy dancing through the isles weiring nothing more than a loin cloth with a gallon jug of electric coolaid in each hand. Admision was only $3 but my brother and I snuck in anyway. Awsome show! BB, The Who and Airplane all sounded great and all put their hearts into it. My brother still has the program. I've been a fan of The Airplane ever sence. Second time I saw them was July of 89 almost 20 years to the day later. This was a reunion tour and the last time Jourma, Jack, Grace, Paul and Marty toured togeather. This was in Philadelphia and was another fantastic show. Cant say I never used drugs but was drug free for both concerts and remember them having great sound and band being very tight. Making these shows available would be a great improvment to what I here in these recordings. although I do appreciate the spontaity of the performance and am happy to have them available. By the way I just saw electric Hot Tuna in Albany, NY on July 30th. Show opened with Steve Earl who was fantastic and works well with some fresh Tuna. G.E. Smith played with Jorma, Jack and Berry and was a great addition on guitar. As always a great performance.

Amazing, I love it when Grace's microphone is so loud!! But Marty really screwed up on Wooden Ships with the "Lalalala I Love You"

this is certainly not the classic line-up of Jefferson Airplane. This is Joey Covington on drums not Spencer Dryden, who left in february 1970. Firing him was a big mistake, as we all can hear.

sorry to disagree, but i think this is totally awesome. i believe the issue here is different worlds. in modern times, we are used to great sound at live shows. we are used to polished performances where the artists play back the hits of their albums to rehearsed perfection. we are used to digital sound board recordings of these perfect shows. that's just not how things were in 1970. besides i personally prefer the realism. this is a historic record of what actually went down during these turbulent times. bands like the dead, the airplane, the doors, hendrix and many others, were pioneers. and what's more, they weren't playing for music critics. they were playining for their fans, who were more or less kids like themselves. kids experimenting. experimenting with music, with drugs, with lifestyles, with, political views, with life itself. that is what this music portrays. if mistakes happen in pursuit of creativity and innovation, so be it.

A very "untogether" performance by the Airplane made ironic by the fact that they opened the show with the song "We Can Be Together"! Well apparently not on this night. It sounds like they were having monitor problems and couldn't hear themselves. One hopes that the situation was solved by the time the Grateful Dead played or I shudder to imagine what that must have sounded like!

so far this is quite disappointing. They seem VERY HIGH and unfortunately out of tune and generally unmusical.

Let me first say that I have always loved the Airplane, have all their early albums, compilations, etc. Never saw them live. So, I have happily approached each of these concerts here on the Vault, but they are pretty disappointing. Grace Slick's voice sounds like nails on a chalkboard. Marty Balin is off key, out of pitch, etc. The musicianship is pretty shoddy as well, although Jorma and Jack are usually the only redeeming aspects of these shows. It's a shame that with all the great bands that played the Fillmore, Winterland, etc. that the Vault continues to pump out these Airplane concerts. I won't complain if you find a good one, but in the meantime, how about something new!
