Signe had a good voice but she sounded more like a lounge singer than a rocker. The addition of Grace Slick was in the stars for this band. Grace had the same marvelous timbre/vibrato that Signe had, but she brought a much more edgy and powerful sound with her vocals. It was interesting in the coming months how much Marty tried to out sing Grace and dominate the vocals, which Grace would let him do....until she decided to let it rip with her magnificent voice.

I really liked the J.A. with Signe. It is so cool to replay these tapes of the transition period between Signe and Grace. I'd love to have heard Grace try Chauffeur Blues but this was the last time the Airplane did the song. Same thing with Come Up the Years which was popular with the early J.A. fans.
